Digital giants operating in sectors ranging from information technology to banking, as well as companies in healthcare and manufacturing, have announced staff reductions this year. According to one report, this list includes over 40 major global enterprises, among which are well-known names such as Amazon, Meta, Oracle, UPS, Walmart, Citi, Dell, Visa, Nike, and Standard Chartered.
These companies cite various reasons for reducing their workforce, including the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) and cost-cutting measures.
According to Business Insider, the list of companies planning layoffs by 2026 is extensive. It includes about 40 organizations from industries such as IT, banking, retail, manufacturing, and healthcare providers. Some of these companies have announced cuts, citing increased productivity due to AI adoption, while others point to slowing business growth, restructuring, and changing consumer demand as primary reasons.
In the report, artificial intelligence (AI) is named one of the key drivers of layoffs. Companies like Block, Coinbase, and Standard Chartered have openly acknowledged that AI has become a factor in reducing staff numbers as it takes over tasks previously performed by humans. However, it was found that not all companies are downsizing solely because of AI; many also cite business reorganization and weak demand in certain areas.
Regarding the largest announced layoffs by 2026, the report highlights UPS. This company announced the reduction of 30,000 jobs as part of network reorganization and cost-saving measures. Oracle, for its part, laid off about 21,000 employees due to AI implementation, which accounts for approximately 13 percent of the company's total workforce. Other large companies that have announced layoffs include Walmart, LinkedIn, Target, Expedia, Freshworks, Coinbase, Crypto.com, Pinterest, Workday, Zillow, eBay, GoPro, Groupon, T-Mobile, Verizon, Kenvue, Papa John's, Patreon, Saks Global, Sprout Social, Victoria's Secret, and Lululemon.
The report states that the announced layoffs represent only part of the overall picture. More than 100 companies in the US have filed WARN notices (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification), which employers are required to file before large-scale layoffs or business closures. These notices may pertain to already announced reductions or indicate additional layoffs in the coming months. Furthermore, according to a World Economic Forum survey, 41% of companies worldwide expect that only AI will lead to staff reductions within the next five years.
