Despite not currently being in the Indian team's plans, Mohammed Shammi maintains hope of returning to international cricket. Shammi, who will turn 36 in September, aims to participate in the 2027 ODI World Cup. His long-time coach, Mohammed Badrudin, stated that the experienced fast bowler is very positive and actively preparing for the upcoming domestic season.
Shammi last played for India in the 2025 World Cup. After that, he left the squad. Although he is fully fit and showing excellent results in domestic cricket, selectors continue to ignore him.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar previously stated that, to his knowledge, Shammi was only willing to play in T20 cricket before a single Test match against Afghanistan. However, his statistics in domestic tournaments tell a different story.
Last season, Shammi took 37 wickets in seven matches in the Ranji Trophy, and then 15 wickets in seven games in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Nevertheless, he failed to make it into the Indian team.
In an interview with 'India Today', coach Mohammed Badrudin revealed that after last season, Shammi reduced his weight by about five kilograms and started training harder than before. He noted that Shammi's attitude is completely positive, and he is highly motivated for the next season. Badrudin believes that India should not completely ignore such an experienced player as Shammi, as he still has a lot of potential. He added that Shammi will always be ready if the country needs his help.
The coach also raised questions regarding the young fast bowling lineup. He pointed out that the Indian fast bowling attack has suffered from injuries and inconsistent performance over the past year. Harshit Rana is out of action due to injury, and Gurnoor Barar did not perform optimally during the tour of England. Badrudin believes that experience plays a decisive role in conditions like those in England and South Africa. He emphasized that the Indian fast bowling did not meet expectations in England, and Shammi could be very useful there. In his opinion, experience would also be needed in South Africa.
Badrudin also questioned the physical conditioning of the Indian fast bowlers. He argued that gym training alone is not enough. According to him, running and sprinting on the field are much more important for fast bowlers, as well as developing stamina. While the gym can build a physique, it cannot create endurance. Furthermore, he noted that Indian fast bowlers lack sufficient rest because constant matches do not allow them to recover.
If India considers experienced fast bowlers for the 2027 World Cup, Shammi's statistics speak in his favor. In South Africa, he has taken 44 wickets in 11 international matches with an average of 22.68. Now it remains to be seen whether the selectors will give him another chance. However, thanks to his consistent performances in domestic cricket and his experience, Mohammed Shammi has maintained his claim.
