During a media day for AmaZulu on Wednesday, Mdaka stated: 'Being so young, I was lucky enough to participate in two MTN8 finals.' He continued: 'I have two silver medals, and I want that gold. I want to work hard for the team so that the players experience what it's like to play in a final, and hopefully, win it this time.'
The 22-year-old footballer joined AmaZulu during the off-season after undergoing a club assessment, noting that he never doubted the move to Durban would happen. He added: 'I wanted to be here. It just took a little longer. I was unlucky to leave and then return, but I am not surprised because I know coach Arthur (Zwane) from the development structures. My presence here is no coincidence.'
Previously, Mdaka worked under Zwane in the youth teams and believes that knowing him significantly eased his transition into the AmaZulu dressing room. Mdaka noted: 'He is a relaxed coach as a person, but when it comes to training and match day, he is very demanding. He expects the best from the players. He is a great coach and an even better person, so it was great to work under his guidance again.'
The left-back emphasized that the intensity of the training process quickly showed him why AmaZulu had had one of the strongest seasons in the league last year. He explained: 'The sessions require effort every day, and I think that's why they finished where they did. The work we put into training reflects in the games.'
Despite anticipating a tough contest against Sekhukhune, Mdaka believes AmaZulu has the quality to advance deep into the tournament, especially after their first-round defeat last season to their former club. He concluded: 'They are a very good and solid team, so the game won't be easy. But we believe in ourselves to do our best. I hope we can make it to the final again and bring home the gold medal this time.'
