A team of researchers, including Stefan Röpke from Charité University Hospital, conducted clinical trials that demonstrated the effectiveness of dronabinol—a pharmaceutical drug derived from delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, the main psychoactive substance in cannabis. It was established that this drug is capable of significantly reducing both the frequency and intensity of nightmares in people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The study involved multicenter, double-blind, randomized controlled trials of phase II. One hundred seventy-one PTSD patients participated, with an average age of 37.9 years, and 79.3 percent of the participants were women. Patients were divided into two groups: 87 received dronabinol, and 84 received placebo.
Treatment results were assessed after ten weeks of therapy. Section B2 of the CAPS-IV scale was used to measure the frequency and intensity of nightmares. The data obtained were officially published in the scientific journal Nature Medicine.
