The Tamil Nadu government announced on Wednesday its intention to protect the state's legal share in interstate river water and preserve its interests in water resource distribution.
The minister accused that the river linking projects, which were announced by previous governments, were progressing slowly, negatively affecting agricultural productivity growth.
The Cauvery Water Management Authority, following a decision by the Cauvery Water Resources Committee, has instructed the state of Karnataka to begin releasing 3500 cusecs of water from the Cauvery River into the state of Tamil Nadu daily. This requirement took effect on Thursday.
According to this directive, Karnataka must ensure the release of a total volume of 4 TMC (thousand million cubic) feet of river water to the neighboring state.
