Foreign Minister Pablo Kirno stated that Pope Leo XIV's visit to Argentina is a historic event for the country and all Argentinians, noting it is the first papal trip to Argentina in nearly four decades.
The previous Pope Francis, who was Argentine and elected in March 2013, passed away in April 2025 without returning to his homeland.
As part of his 12-day tour of Latin America, scheduled from November 6 to 17, Pope Leo XIV will visit ten cities across Argentina, Uruguay, and Peru.
According to Kirno, in Argentina, the Pope will visit Buenos Aires, as well as Huaхан, a pilgrimage center located 70 kilometers from the capital, and Córdoba, a province of the same name in the center of the country.
The Argentine minister reported that the Holy See requested confidentiality regarding the process initiated in February with an invitation from the Argentine government. He added that logistics, security, protocol, transport, and overall organization will be coordinated jointly with the Holy See in the coming weeks, and the government will approve a decree recognizing this visit as of 'national interest.'
During his stay, the Pope will meet with Javier Milei, according to the head of Argentine diplomacy.
Leo XIV has a special connection to Latin America, especially Peru, where he lived and served as a missionary for 20 years. During his visit to Peru, the Pope plans to visit the city of Chiclayo, where he was a bishop.
This is the second trip announced by the Vatican this year; the Pope also intends to visit France in 2026, where he is expected to visit the UNESCO headquarters and Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
Since being elected Pope last May, former Cardinal Robert Francis Prevozt has made four international apostolic journeys. The first, at the end of 2025, was to Turkey and Lebanon, focusing on ecumenical dialogue and peace in the Middle East.
Subsequently, the Pope visited Monaco in March, and a month later undertook his longest journey to date, spending 10 days in Africa, including visits to Angola, Algeria, Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea.
In June, he was in Spain from the 6th to the 12th, visiting Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands.
