More than 210,000 applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 classes were submitted within hours of the launch of the online admission system in the Gauteng province for 2027. This high response underscores the public's sustained trust in the provincial digital platform for student placement in schools.
The Gauteng Department of Education reported on Wednesday that 210,055 applications were received by noon after the system started at 8 am. Lebogan Mabile, the Minister of the Gauteng Province for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, noted that such strong interest reflects the trust of parents and guardians in the online admission process.

Mabile stated that the system went live at 08:00 on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, and by 12:00, the Gauteng Department of Education had already received 210,055 applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8, demonstrating the consistent confidence of parents and guardians in the Provincial Online Admission System.
The Department specified that the highest demand was observed in the Ekurhuleni South and Tshwane West districts. Some schools recorded an exceptionally high number of applications in the initial hours. Among the secondary schools, Hoërskool Langenhoven in Tshwane West received 1,168 applications, Alberton High School received 1,098, and Hoërskool Acacia received 917 applications. At the primary school level, Rachel de Beer Primary School received 474 applications, Laerskool Acacia received 461, and Laerskool Woortrekker Euphis received 411 applications.
The Department also reported that interest in the admission process was evident even before the official start: between 7:30 and 7:59 am, 12,058 parents joined the online queue awaiting the system launch. The Department added that the application process has since proceeded smoothly, without any serious technical failures.
General information about the education system
Gauteng remains the largest provincial education system in South Africa, serving over 2.4 million learners in 2,111 public ordinary schools, including 37 specialized schools. According to the department, student enrollment continues to grow annually: in the last year, more than 23,000 additional students enrolled in the system, equivalent to establishing approximately 19 new schools, each capable of accommodating about 1,200 students.
Since its implementation in 2015, the online admission system has been continuously expanded and, according to the department, successfully placed about 400,000 first-year students during the 2025 admission cycle. Various improvements have been introduced for the 2027 admission cycle, including increased system stability, faster data processing, automated SMS notifications, and expanded information on school language offerings.
Mabile urged parents not to delay submitting applications, emphasizing that early application allows sufficient time to upload supporting documents, resolve any outstanding issues, and increase the likelihood of a smooth placement process. The Department also warned parents against scammers who claim they can secure school places in exchange for money. It was noted that the Online Admission is completely free, and no person, company, or organization is permitted to demand payment from parents or influence student placement.
Parents needing assistance are advised to use the 48 decentralized admission centers, district offices, the provincial head office, and public schools throughout the application period. The application period for the 2027 online admission will be open until midnight on September 4, 2026, and parents can submit applications through the Gauteng Department of Education's online portal.
