SpaceX prioritizes artificial intelligence, doubling investments and expanding infrastructure

Artificial intelligence has consolidated itself as a central pillar in SpaceX's strategy. As reported by The Wall Street Journal, the company increased its investments in this area in just one quarter and is already seeing the first fruits of this strategic focus.

Despite ending the period with negative results, the company led by Elon Musk maintains significant ambitions to increase its infrastructure and boost revenue growth.

AI takes center stage in strategy

The total investment made by SpaceX this quarter reached $18.4 billion (equivalent to about R$ 94.4 billion). Of these resources, $15.8 billion (approximately R$ 81.1 billion) was specifically directed towards artificial intelligence, representing a 100% increase compared to the previous quarter.

The company's approach involves multiple fronts simultaneously: developing its own AI model, increasing computational processing capacity, signing new commercial agreements, and preparing to launch the first data centers in orbit, scheduled for 2027.

SpaceX states that it is building AI computing capacity at a speed superior to any other corporation. Core projects include expanding AI processing capacity, creating data centers both on land and in space, exclusively using Nvidia chips, and expanding infrastructure contracts aimed at the sector.

Revenue growth supports plans

Although costs have increased, revenue has also shown progress. In the second quarter, the company generated $7.8 billion (about R$ 40 billion), representing a significant increase of 92% compared to the same period last year.

Nevertheless, the final balance showed a net loss of $541 million (approximately R$ 2.8 billion), a result that, however, exceeded Wall Street projections. After the release of these figures, shares fell by approximately 7% in after-hours trading.

Bret Johnsen, the company's CFO, commented that part of these investments is already beginning to generate returns. He stated: 'Specifically on the AI computing side, we managed to invest capital in a way that generates a return in less than a year.'

AI advances without neglecting space

In the months leading up to the IPO, Musk integrated SpaceX with xAI, further strengthening the strategic direction toward artificial intelligence. Additionally, an agreement was formalized to exclusively use Nvidia chips, along with contracts to rent the company's data center capacity to Google and Anthropic.

Parallel to the increase in AI investments, SpaceX continues to expand its space operations. The Starlink service recorded revenue of $4.3 billion (about R$ 22.1 billion), surpassing the $2.6 billion (approximately R$ 13.3 billion) earned a year earlier. By the end of June, the service had 12 million subscribers.

The company projects reaching $100 billion (about R$ 513 billion) in annualized recurring revenue by December. Furthermore, the goal of reaching $1 trillion (approximately R$ 5.13 trillion) in annual revenue was moved up to 2030, one year earlier than initially planned.

Musk emphasized that artificial intelligence will be fundamental to enabling the development of robots, autonomous vehicles, and future energy installations and factories on the Moon. If these plans materialize, the first data centers in orbit should begin operations in 2027.

SpaceX signs multi-million dollar contract with U.S. Space Force for military satellites

SpaceX has signed a new high-value contract with the United States Space Force, aiming to increase its contribution to the country's strategic defense programs. This agreement, announced on Wednesday (29th), totals US$ 1.6 billion (equivalent to R$ 8.2 billion) and stipulates the execution of 18 Falcon 9 rocket launches by 2027.

Objective of Military Missions

These missions will be dedicated to placing military satellites into orbit. Such satellites are designed for detection, tracking, and target guidance functions, which strengthens the space infrastructure employed by the U.S. Armed Forces.

Part of the Main Launch Program

The 18 launches were designated through two service orders inserted into the main launch procurement program of the U.S. Space Force. In this program, various companies, including SpaceX, United Launch Alliance (ULA), Blue Origin, and other aerospace industry companies, compete for contracts considered vital and high-value for the U.S. government.

According to the Space Force itself, the satellites will receive integration into the military tracking and target guidance system, enhancing the capacity to monitor aerial objects and consolidating national defense space infrastructure.

Expansion of SpaceX's Presence

This new contract solidifies SpaceX's position as one of the primary partners of the U.S. government in national security initiatives. This announcement comes shortly after another agreement established between Elon Musk's company and the Space Force. In May of this year, the company secured a contract worth US$ 2.29 billion (R$ 11.7 billion) to develop the Space Data Network (SDN) Backbone.

The SDN project aims to create a secure satellite communication network capable of interconnecting military sensors and globally distributed weapon systems through low Earth orbit satellites. The Space Force indicated that the SDN will enable continuous, fast, and secure information exchange between different military platforms, reducing reaction time during operations.

Currently, SpaceX already plays a relevant role in U.S. space strategy, utilizing the Starlink and Starshield constellations for military and governmental purposes. In recent years, Washington has significantly increased investments in defense space programs, with Congress approving billions of dollars to foster private participation and expand satellite communication capacity.

Alignment with the Golden Dome Project

The expansion of military satellite infrastructure also aligns with the directives of President Donald Trump's administration. At the beginning of his term, in January 2025, Trump signed a decree to boost the Golden Dome project, a national missile defense system focused on protecting the United States against ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missile threats. In this scenario, the increase in the military satellite network is seen as an essential pillar for the system's operation, facilitating agile data sharing and improving the detection and response capabilities of the American Armed Forces.
