Tennis Canada announced that 3,100 tickets were bought immediately after the announcement of Eala's match last Friday. By Sunday, all tickets were sold out, as stated in the organization's release.
Alexandra Eala is the highest-ranked Filipino tennis player since the pre-war period, having entered the top 20 after her victory last Monday. Her achievements have attracted the attention of compatriots, especially the Filipino diaspora, which numbers about 12 million worldwide.
No sports hero has inspired such admiration and support as Manny Pacquiao during his phenomenal run toward an unprecedented eight boxing championships two decades ago. Singaporean journalist Raul Dansel noted that working migrants from the Philippines cannot help but enjoy the afterglow of Eala's achievements, which broke the glass ceiling, albeit in a slightly different way. He explained: "You can somehow boast, even internally, wherever you are, in a way of remaining a 'guest,' a visitor, an outsider."
Dansel added that many compatriots tell themselves: "Hey, I'm Filipino. Look who we are. Look what we can do." The veteran writer emphasized that what is special about Eala is that she embodies the quintessence of a Filipino. He described her as a typical Filipino one might encounter on Orchard Road in Singapore, St. Andrew's Square in Hong Kong, or at Dubai Airport.
"This neutral Tagalog accent and English, which is known to first form in her head in Tagalog. These traits that we Filipinos admire globally: modesty and self-deprecation, resilience and optimism, friendliness, warmth, and generosity," wrote Dansel. He also noted that the qualities of this tennis player are refreshing in a world where people do the most unattractive things to ironically get 'likes' on social media.
"Here is someone who is genuinely good, someone who does something truly impressive and inspiring, and they are widely praised—and she is Filipino. She is one hundred percent ours, from our small, noisy tribe on this huge, complex planet," he enthusiastically declared.
Ell Soriano, a domestic worker from the Philippines in Hong Kong, was more concise in her praise after Eala won her first WTA 500 title two days ago: "Congratulations, Alex. We are so proud of you," she said.
Nevertheless, Eala is inevitably compared to the previous Filipino sports hero, Pacquiao. However, this comparison carries only a positive connotation. Ian Vincent Cavada Mantikajon believes that both Pacquiao and Eala represent the emergence of what can be called the new Filipino, breaking the burden of colonial history and the dependent mindset of Filipinos.
The lawyer observed: "Pacquiao never seemed concerned with the question: 'Can a Filipino compete?' Instead, he stepped into the ring as if asking: 'Who can stand against me—a Filipino?'" He also noted that Eala now carries the banner in defense of Filipinos worldwide. Furthermore, he added that Eala behaves differently from the traditional Filipino underdog. "She has a distinctly expressed 'Gen Z progressiveness': cosmopolitanism, yet with respect and groundedness," he added.
Mantikajon concluded: "Pacquiao and Eala are globally educated, but not culturally intimidated. I hope they inspire more Filipinos." However, today's match at the Sobeys Stadium in Toronto presents a certain challenge for the Filipino diaspora. Eala's opponent is Canadian Leila Fernandes, ranked 30th, whose grandparents immigrated from the Philippines, making her in the eyes and hearts of all Filipinos a 'kababayan' (countryman).

Thousands of Filipinos watched the final between Eala and Pegula, even after the match was suspended Sunday evening (US time) due to heavy and prolonged rain.
