Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus expressed support for captain Siya Kolisi, noting his ability to overcome injuries and lead the world champions to victory. He emphasized that history shows the captain always achieves success in crucial moments.
Kolisi is preparing to return from injury in a friendly match against Argentina on Saturday evening. Last year proved difficult: the player featured sparingly for the Sharks in the United Rugby Championship and missed the South African National Championship campaign.
According to Erasmus, this experienced forward has repeatedly proven his ability to return after long breaks in perfect form. Erasmus noted: 'There is one player we don't have to worry about returning from injury—that is Siya.' He added that before the 2023 World Cup, Siya had a long-term knee injury, and although it was a race against time, he managed to win it.
Furthermore, he faced issues before the 2019 World Cup. Erasmus suggested that thanks to his age and experience, Kolisi has learned to cope with injuries, undergo rehabilitation, and withstand pressure and disappointment. He stressed: 'Siya is very diligent in this, and based on our experience, we have never doubted his choice. He always delivers results.'
The coach also stated that the Springboks have enough depth in the backline to carefully manage the load on Kolisi during his return to play. 'We have Marco van der Westhuizen who can replace Siya,' he said. He also mentioned that a similar situation applies to Eben Etzebeth and Lukhanyo Amadu, who are also recovering from injuries.
Erasmus added that as long as these players are productive and effective on the field, the team aims to utilize their maximum possible time. However, they will likely play half a match or slightly more.
Explanation of bench selection
The Bok coach also explained the logic behind his bench selections, given that Etzebeth's and De Klerk's playing time is expected to be limited. 'Ben-Jason Dixon will come on for Eben, and Kobus Wiesse will come on for Lukhanyo, because Eben is returning from a concussion and a long absence, and he won't be able to play 80 minutes. So when he tires, Ben-Jason will replace him at lock 4.' He continued: 'The same goes for Lukhanyo. He hasn't played in a long time. We will see how long he lasts, and then we will bring on Kobus, who is also an impact player in the out line, unlike Ben-Jason.'
