Three-day practice match between India and Sri Lanka may be cancelled due to rain threat

The Indian team has arrived in Sri Lanka ahead of the upcoming two-match Test series. However, 24-year-old left-hander Sai Sudarshan could not join the squad as he is still recovering from a big toe injury.

He sustained the injury during the Vijay Hazare Trophy match and subsequently underwent rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE). The medical team is closely monitoring his recovery, and reports indicate that he has not yet received medical clearance from the BCCI. He will only be able to join the team after receiving the green light.

Before the start of the Test series, the Indian squad is scheduled to play a three-day practice match against the Sri Lankan team on August 7th. The first Test is planned for August 15-19 in Galle, while the second and final Test will take place from August 23-27 in Colombo.

Who will play at number three for Sri Lanka?

The team management views Sai Sudarshan as a potential player for the No. 3 position in the Test match lineup. Nevertheless, he has not fully cemented this spot, and his performance has been regularly questioned. Despite this, his performance with 81 runs in a single Test match against Afghanistan boosted his confidence.

If he cannot recover fully in time, there is a possibility that Devdhadh Padikkal might get a chance to feature in the starting XI for the first Test.

The Indian squad for the Test series in Sri Lanka includes: Shubman Gill (captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Sai Sudarshan, Dhruva Jurrel (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Sutara, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnaur Barada, Devdhadh Padikkal, Akib Nabi, and Saransh Jana.

Difficulties have increased for the Indian team before the two-match series against Sri Lanka. Uncertainty has arisen regarding the participation of five players in this series. Two of these five athletes have already been excluded from the squad, and the participation of the remaining three depends on their physical condition. The large number of injured players is causing disruptions to the Indian team's composition.

Exclusion of Rana and Reddy

According to a report by Sports Tak, fast bowler Harshit Rana and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy cannot participate in the trip to Sri Lanka due to injuries. The absence of these two young players is considered a serious blow to the team. Since Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy were very useful to the team in both attack and defense, their absence may create significant problems for captain Shubman Gill.

Uncertainty surrounding Bumrah

There is also doubt about the participation of Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. He has been advised to rest until July 30, after which he will provide a fitness report at the Centre of Excellence in Bangalore. If Bumrah's report is positive, he will be able to join the team. However, if he is not fully fit, he will also have to miss the series.

Return of Sai Sudarshan

Regarding the participation of Sai Sudarshan, who plays at number three in the lineup after Chetishwara Pujara, there is also uncertainty. Like Bumrah, Sudarshan is in recovery. His participation in this series is not yet guaranteed. Although the selection committee may include these two experienced players in the squad, there might be a note next to their names indicating dependence on physical condition.

Sandeep missing first Test

All-rounder Washington Sundar may miss the first Test, starting on August 15 in Galle, due to injury. Nevertheless, there is a possibility of his return for the second Test, starting on August 23 in Colombo at SSC, but this will also depend on his physical fitness.

Jadeja's return expected

While injuries are increasing the tension, the return of experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja to the team is considered almost inevitable. After Manav Sutar debuted in the spin department and took seven wickets, it will now be interesting to see if Harsh Dubey can retain his place in the squad.

Before the trip to Sri Lanka, the BCCI is organizing a meeting to assess the performance of the Indian team during tours in Ireland, England, and Zimbabwe. This gathering will not be limited to just selecting the squad, as it will also serve as a platform for making important decisions regarding the support staff of head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Preparation for the Sri Lanka series

The Indian team is preparing to play a two-match test series on home soil in Sri Lanka next month. The selection of the team composition will be made by Tuesday, July 28, ahead of the series, which starts on August 15. The first match is scheduled from August 15 to 19 in Galle, and the second from August 23 to 27 at the Singlites club in Colombo.

According to BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikhy in an interview with the Times of India, the squad for the matches in Sri Lanka will be announced within the next two days. The series in Sri Lanka presents a serious challenge for Indian players, as the pitches there are favorable to spinners, and Indian cricket has often struggled on foreign grounds previously.

Analysis of recent overseas tours

Immediately after finalizing the team selection, the BCCI will hold a meeting in the first half of August to thoroughly review the results of recent overseas visits. Specifically, the team suffered a defeat against Ireland in a T20 series led by Shreyas Iyer, with a score of 0-2. Following this, England secured a convincing victory over India in a five-match T20 series with a score of 4-0. Furthermore, under Shubman Gill's leadership, the Indian team lost to England in an ODI series with a score of 1-2.

Nevertheless, in the tour of Zimbabwe, India showed a strong recovery, winning the first T20 match by seven wickets, marking Shreyas Iyer's first victory as a T20I captain. Devajit Saikhy emphasized that the meeting will discuss not only the results but also the reasons for the defeats. He noted that a comprehensive analysis will be conducted after the team returns from Zimbabwe, including what went wrong in England, in which areas the team lagged behind, and what improvements need to be made.

Questions regarding support staff

An important aspect of this meeting is also the fate of the support staff. Since the Indian team did not show the expected level in three disciplines—batting, bowling, and fielding—during recent tours, the BCCI will evaluate the work of assistant coach Ryan Ten Doshet and fielding coach T. Dilip. Their two-year contract expires along with the current appointment for the cricket matches, and now the BCCI will decide whether or not to renew their contracts.

Devajit Saikhy stated that the review committee will make a decision regarding the extension of the contracts of the two support staff members. According to sources, there is currently no clarity regarding the renewal of both specialists' contracts, and the possibility of changes cannot be ruled out. T. Dilip was one of the most popular members of the staff, known for starting the tradition of presenting the 'Best Fielder Medal' after every match. During Rahul Dravid's tenure, Dilip was part of the team.
