A scene suddenly unfolded at a house in Bagha that made the family members' hearts race. Two animals met on the property—a meeting rarely seen even in the wild: a royal cobra, the world's longest venomous snake, and a massive python known for its powerful grip.
For a short time, it seemed the yard had turned into a jungle. Both snakes stood facing each other. Family members came out of the house, and the news quickly spread throughout the neighborhood. In minutes, a crowd of local residents gathered, their gazes fixed on one question: what would happen if they started fighting?
This incident occurred in the Gonouli forest zone, which is part of the Valmikinagar reserve. At Nitesh Kumar's home campus, located directly opposite the forestry office, one snake first appeared. Before the family could understand anything, a second giant snake appeared before them. They came from different directions and stopped face to face. According to witnesses, for some time their behavior suggested that a conflict could start at any moment.
The family, without putting themselves at risk, immediately left the house and reported it to the forestry department. Upon receiving the information, local residents also began arriving at the scene. Some observed this rare sight from a safe distance, while many recorded videos on their mobile phones. However, the forestry department constantly urged people to stay away because the royal cobra is extremely venomous, and danger could increase at any moment. Wildlife conflict expert Abhishek answered this question. According to him, the royal cobra is considered the longest venomous snake in the world, with a length that can reach 16–18 feet. A characteristic of this cobra is that it hunts other snakes. If the snake opposite is smaller in size, and the royal cobra is in a stronger position, the probability of an attack increases. Nevertheless, this does not always happen; sometimes both snakes simply move in different directions without fighting. Experts believe that in this case, the royal cobra's position looked more dominant. However, if the python were significantly larger in size and weight, the outcome of the duel could have been different. The python is non-venomous, but its strength lies in its tight grip. It suffocates its prey by coiling around it. Thus, if a large python coils around a royal cobra, it could be fatal to it. That is, in such rare cases, who wins depends on the size, strength of both snakes, and the circumstances of the moment.
The Valmikinagar reserve is known for its dense forests and rich biodiversity. During the rainy season, snakes, pythons, and other wild animals often enter residential areas in search of food, a safe place, or water. Experts emphasize that residents of villages adjacent to the forest need to exercise increased vigilance during this period. They should maintain cleanliness around homes, manage grain and garbage properly, and avoid going outside at night without lighting.
The forestry department clarified that if a snake or another wild animal is spotted in a house, field, or nearby, one should not panic or attempt to catch it independently. Such actions can be dangerous for both humans and wildlife. It is necessary to immediately report it to the forestry department or a trained snake rescue team so that the animal can be extracted safely.
