Sohrab Purnazeri, aged 43, is a virtuoso of the tanbur, kamancheh, and setar and is considered one of the pioneers in performing contemporary Iranian music. His father, Kayhsoro Purnazeri, who founded the Shams Ensemble in 1980, is a respected composer and tanbur performer in Iran.
Sohrab joined the Shams Ensemble at the age of twelve and has since captivated audiences through performances, recordings, and collaborations with world-class musicians. Although he follows in his musical family's footsteps, he has developed unique and distinctive playing techniques that make his performance style unprecedented. He is also involved in vocals and composition, using a similarly unique approach.
In the summer of 2017, Sohrab first presented the 'C Project' alongside Homayoun Shajarian at the historic Sa'dabad complex in Tehran. This project was created with the aim of reviving the 'wisdom' and old traditions of the Shahnameh for a younger generation and introducing the audience to the roots of ancient Iranian culture and literature.
