HFCL, a manufacturer of telecommunication equipment, announced that its board of directors has approved a new investment package worth approximately 400 crore rupees. These funds will be allocated to increase the production capacity for optical fiber and optical fiber optic cable.
The planned expansion will be financed through a combination of internal reserves and borrowed funds, with completion expected by July 2028. In regulatory filings, HFCL stated that the decision to further increase capacity was made in light of a strong order book for OFC and optical communication products, as well as an anticipated flow of new business opportunities in the short and medium term and favorable long-term global demand.
HFCL noted that the growth in demand is driven by several factors, including artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, hyperscale data centers, cloud computing, high-performance computing, 5G deployment, FTTH and broadband access expansion, enterprise fiber optic adoption, rural connectivity initiatives, and telecommunications network modernization programs.
According to the submitted reports, the company's total production capacity for optical fiber will be increased to 38.50 million kilometers of fiber per year, exceeding the current expansion target of 33.90 million km. Similarly, the OFC production capacity will be raised to 56.36 million km per year, compared to the current target of 42.36 million km. Currently, the company possesses existing capacities of 28 million km for optical fiber and 34 million km for optical fiber optic cable.
The company stated that this expansion will strengthen HFCL's manufacturing capabilities, improve its ability to fulfill current and future orders, enhance operational efficiency and economies of scale, reinforce supply chain resilience, and support its export growth strategy. Furthermore, the expansion will enable the company to derive greater value from its integrated manufacturing platform and reverse integration initiatives, thereby strengthening its position as a leading global manufacturer of optical communication products.
