French Archaeologist Calls for In-Depth Study of Sasanian Military Architecture

It met the high expectations of series fans.

Israel reacted to a statement made by 14 countries, guaranteeing the maintenance of current rules regarding the Mosque Platform, also known as the Temple Mount by Jews, the location where the two holy temples were situated.

The current status quo of this holy site was established in 1967 by the Israeli government, which granted administration to the Waqf, a Jordanian institution. The Waqf stipulated that worship there is restricted to Muslims, allowing Jews to visit only as tourists.

At the end of July, during the celebration of Tisha B'Av, more than 3,000 Jews accessed the holy site. They were escorted by the Israeli police and accompanied by the far-right National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, who advocates that Israel should take control of the Temple Mount.

In a statement, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) asserted that the declaration supported by the Foreign Ministries of the Arab Ministerial Committee, convened by Jordan, is based on false allegations, historical distortions, and complete ignorance of the facts.

The ministry deemed the accusation that Israel violates freedom of worship 'cynical,' especially when it is stated that the entire Temple Mount (where Al-Aqsa is located) is an exclusive place of worship for Muslims, disregarding the historical connection of Jews with Jerusalem and its holy sites.

The Israeli MFA continued in the statement by saying that under Israeli sovereignty, Jerusalem, the eternal capital of the State of Israel, has never been so accessible and open to believers of all faiths.

This status quo was defined after the Six-Day War, a period during which Israel occupied East Jerusalem, the Palestinian portion of the city, which would be annexed in 1980.

Jordan summoned the foreign ministers of Islamic countries on that day in response to the increase in mass invasions by Israeli settlers and far-right Jewish leaders at the holy site, including the incursion mentioned at the end of last month.

These practices, described as 'increasingly serious and illegal,' occur frequently despite condemnations from Jordan and the rest of the Muslim world. Islamic countries denounce that these reports are ignored by Israeli authorities and constitute a 'provocation.'

For this reason, the final declaration calls for the initiation of an initiative to force the international community to compel Israel, as an occupying power, to respect the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its holy sites, while appealing to the UN Security Council to take 'immediate measures' against Israel.

The PH Juana project, developed by Estudio NU, aims to create a space where what already exists and what is new coexist, enabling a new interpretation of contemporary life.

The building is located in the Coghlan neighborhood, occupying a plot shared with two other units, and has an independent access facing the public street. Originally, the PH consisted of four closed and adjacent rooms—two located at the front and two facing an internal patio—characterized by small windows and low light incidence.

The central intervention of the project involved unifying three of these environments into a single social space directed towards the internal patio. This change allowed for cross-ventilation and the entry of light from both the street and the patio. In this new integrated space, the kitchen, living room, and a multifunctional area designated for the hall and work were incorporated. The installation of glass sliding doors towards the patio functioned as an articulating element of the social area, while the removal of walls expanded the visual views from the entrance to the back of the patio, culminating in the planned landscaping.

The remaining fourth room was designated as the bedroom, being the only space isolated from the rest of the residence and without a direct view of the patio, which lends a sense of greater privacy. An architectural challenge was designing the openings facing the street, seeking to create views without compromising privacy; this was solved with windows positioned starting from two meters high, framing the treetops, but kept above the sightline of passersby.

A notable discovery during the execution of the project occurred when removing the ceilings from a previous renovation: a brick barrel vault ceiling was revealed, highly characteristic of old PHs in Buenos Aires, with an impressive height of four meters. This ceiling was restored and left exposed as the main material element of the house. All other components, such as plastering, frames, and internal partitions, were maintained at a standard height of 2.60 meters, corresponding to the original ceiling height.

The facade facing the street establishes a connection with the interior, using a combination of exposed brick and perforated metal sheets. The other chosen materials complement the prominent texture of the brick without competing with it, including warm woods, granite, and pine. For the patio, a white and non-textured color palette was selected, aiming to create a contrast with the interior and the green of the surrounding vegetation.

PH Juana reflects the philosophy of Estudio NU: intervening does not always mean erasing, but rather interpreting. In this specific project, this premise manifests itself through overlapping layers that visually and metaphorically illustrate the passage of time.
