Brazilian climate presents contrast: South at risk of hail, interior with low humidity

Brazil will experience a significant climatic contrast between Tuesday, the 4th, and Wednesday, the 5th. According to Inmet, the Southern Region will remain under unstable conditions, with forecasts for rain and hail risk, while the country's interior will face a succession of dry days with low humidity levels.

In addition to areas under the influence of rain, other regions may register isolated showers, notably in the North, Central-West, the coastal strip of the Northeast, and Espírito Santo. The meteorological agency maintains active warnings for both storms and periods of dry air in several states.

Southern Region maintains instability and possibility of hail

The biggest climatic changes in the coming days will be concentrated in the Southern Region. Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul have forecasts for rain, thunderstorms, and potential hail fall in certain locations. On Tuesday (the 4th), precipitation will be more intense in Rio Grande do Sul, although it may also occur in the central-west of Santa Catarina and parts of Paraná. Instabilities will continue to progress through the region on Wednesday (the 5th).

Inmet issued a yellow warning of potential danger for storms covering western and southern Paraná, much of Santa Catarina, and all of Rio Grande do Sul.

Country's interior suffers from low humidity

While rain advances through the South, a large part of the Brazilian interior will remain under the predominance of dry weather. Among the areas with the lowest relative humidity indices are the Central-West, Southeast, inland Northeast, and Tocantins. In certain points, indices may drop below 20% during the afternoon.

Specific alerts include: low humidity in south-central Tocantins, west of Bahia, northeast of Mato Grosso, and north of Goiás. There are also potential danger warnings in Pará, Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Pernambuco, Bahia, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Federal District, São Paulo, and Minas Gerais. In the regions influenced by dry air, humidity is expected to vary between 20% and 30%, keeping the weather stable in most of the interior.

North, Northeast, and Southeast will have scattered rains

In the North, instabilities remain mainly concentrated between Amazonas and Roraima, with expectations of isolated rain and thunderstorms. Rondônia, Acre, Pará, and Amapá may also present precipitation.

In the Northeast, rains will be restricted mainly to the coastal area. There are alerts for heavy rain and winds in some states, while the interior will maintain little cloud cover. In southern Bahia, fog formation is possible at dawn on Wednesday.

In the Southeast, most of the region should have stable weather. Exceptions occur in areas of Espírito Santo, northeast of Minas Gerais, and São Paulo, where isolated rains may occur. Among the capitals, the predicted minimum temperatures are 13°C in Belo Horizonte (MG) and 15°C in Brasília (DF), while maximums may reach 36°C in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Cuiabá (MT), and Palmas (TO).

Extratropical cyclone expected to cause severe weather with hail and strong winds in Southern Brazil

An extratropical cyclone is forecast to intensify severe weather conditions in the Southern Region of Brazil during Wednesday (5th) and Thursday (6th). According to Inmet, it is possible that the three states in the region will be affected by heavy rain, hail, and strong wind gusts.

The effects of this system may also extend to southern Mato Grosso do Sul, southern São Paulo, and areas adjacent to state borders. In contrast, the rest of the country's interior is expected to maintain a dry weather trend.

The Southern Region should receive the biggest impacts

Climate change will be most noticeable in the Southern Region, as the cyclone develops over the South Atlantic and has the potential to gain strength near the coast of South America, generating conditions favorable for strong winds, thunderstorms, rain, and hail.

On Wednesday, instabilities will begin to manifest in western and southern Paraná, western Santa Catarina, and northwestern Rio Grande do Sul. As the hours progress, these instabilities will spread to other parts of the three states, increasing the risk of storms.

The scenario predicted for Thursday remains similar, with projections of rain and thunderstorms, as well as the chance of new hail events, concentrated mainly in the south-central part of Rio Grande do Sul.

Among the main expected impacts are: continuous rain accompanied by thunderstorms; probability of hail in various locations in the Southern Region; wind gusts linked to the cyclone; and a drop in temperature in Rio Grande do Sul on Thursday.

Instabilities expand to other areas

The effects of this climate system also reach the Center-West. Southern Mato Grosso do Sul should face rain, thunderstorms, and the possibility of hail between Wednesday and Thursday. Simultaneously, areas in Goiás and the Federal District may record isolated rain showers.

In the Southeast, the forecast points to rain and thunderstorms in southern São Paulo, particularly on the border with Paraná. Additionally, the early morning may feature fog in sections of the coasts of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

In the North, precipitation will remain concentrated between Amazonas and Roraima. In the Northeast, rains will continue to be limited mainly to the coastal strip.

Dry weather persists in most of the territory

While instability advances over certain regions, the country's interior maintains low air humidity levels. Inmet keeps active alerts for areas in the Center-West, Southeast, Matopiba, and some parts of the Northeast.

Storm alerts remain valid in part of the Southern Region and in southern Mato Grosso do Sul, as well as high wind warnings between the coast of Maranhão and Rio Grande do Norte.

Regarding temperatures, Porto Alegre is expected to register the lowest minimum, with a forecast of 11°C, and the maximum will be only 18°C on Thursday. On the other hand, Palmas (TO) and Teresina (PI) may reach 36°C.

Inmet informed that it will continue monitoring the cyclone, as its evolution may influence meteorological conditions in the Southern Region in the coming days.
