The film Spider-Man: Brand New Day has set new records in preliminary box office receipts. The co-production by Sony and Marvel Studios surpassed the results of the preliminary screenings of Spider-Man: No Way Home from 2021, which earned $50 million during Thursday showings.
This success is attributed to the fact that the production of the film, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, is valued at $225 million in net profit, and preliminary ticket sales amounted to $80 million. The film Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, was released today at 12:00, and its preliminary screening will be available to Prime Video members on Wednesday evening.
According to some sources, the revenue from the preliminary screenings of Brand New Day this evening could exceed the figures of Avengers: Endgame. Exact data will be known tomorrow morning.
No Way Home, which began its preliminary screenings at 15:00 on the release day, ranked third among all preliminary screenings, trailing Avengers: Endgame from 2019, which collected $60 million (with a start at 18:00), and Star Wars: Force Awakens from 2015, which earned $57 million on Thursday.
Brand New Day's earnings, exceeding $50 million, secure its place among the top three preliminary screenings in the US and Canada, representing the best result for a Sony film and the highest figure since the Covid pandemic.
No Way Home's preliminary earnings of $50 million accounted for only 41% of its debut earnings on Friday of $121.96 million. This led to the second-largest opening in American theaters, falling short of Avengers: Endgame's record of $357.1 million. Force Awakens' preliminary $57 million represented 48% of its first Friday earnings of $119.1 million.
Although Force Awakens' three-day opening of $247.96 million was previously a record opening in North America, it subsequently dropped to fourth place. NRG predicted a low domestic opening for Brand New Day at $195 million, but theaters and other tracking services, such as Greenlight Analytics, expect much higher figures, ranging from $260 to $300 million.
Some experts suggest taking into account the start time of the preliminary screenings and the season when making forecasts, but note that this is irrelevant because it concerns a significant amount of money, the largest in a long time, and surpassing the previous post-Covid record of Deadpool and Wolverine at $38.5 million, set two July ago.
Another striking point is that Spider-Man achieves these financial successes without using IMAX screens, unlike Barbie, which used them three years ago during the release of Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer.
Currently, Brand New Day holds the highest audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes among nine live-action Spider-Man films, reaching 98%. The critical rating is also strong—90% certified fresh, which is nearly comparable to No Way Home's 93%.
