The Minister of Transport and Human Settlements for KwaZulu-Natal, Siboniso Duma, praised the teams of the transport and human settlements departments for their response to the harsh weather conditions in the province. Snow continues to fall at Kinmel Guest Farm near Rhodes, maintaining winter conditions in this region.

The KZN province is expected to remain cloudy and cold or cool, with scattered showers and rain over the northern areas. Isolated precipitation is forecast elsewhere, except in the southwestern part.

Weather conditions in the southern regions

According to the South African Weather Service, most of the country will remain clear and cool, but variable cloudiness and lower temperatures are expected in the southern areas. Isolated or scattered rain and downpours are forecast along the southern coast, covering the Western Cape, parts of the Eastern Cape, and southern KwaZulu-Natal.

Rainfall and wind forecasts

The probability of precipitation in the southwestern Cape, in the southern inland region around Beaufort West and Graaff-Reinet, as well as along sections of the Wild Coast and the southern coast of KwaZulu-Natal, is 30%. Higher chances of rainfall, reaching 60%, are expected along the southern coast, especially from Garden Route towards the Eastern Cape coast.

The main weather concern will be strong winds. Windy conditions are forecast over the extreme western inland area and along the southwestern coast of the Western Cape. A Level 1 yellow warning has been issued for the Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas coasts from Monday afternoon until Tuesday regarding destructive coastal winds and waves.

Maritime hazards

South-easterly winds of 40 km/h to 60 km/h, with gusts up to 70 km/h – 80 km/h, are predicted to complicate navigation for small vessels and jet skis. Wave heights are expected to reach four to five meters, creating dangerous sea conditions and potentially disrupting beach and port activities.

Temperatures in the southern parts of the country will remain cool or cold, while the central and northern inland areas will be characterized by predominantly dry weather without significant rainfall. Residents in coastal areas are advised to exercise caution near the shoreline, and sailors and fishermen are advised to monitor weather updates as stormy sea conditions develop along the Western Cape coast.

Residents of South Africa can expect a generally calm and stable winter day on Tuesday, as the South African Weather Service has not issued severe weather warnings, fire threat alerts, or other advisories.

Weather conditions by region

Most of the country will enjoy good conditions, although some areas are expecting cool temperatures and frost early in the morning. In Gauteng, the day is forecast to start with frost in the south, after which temperatures will rise to cool levels, while later in the far north of the province, warmer weather is expected.

In the provinces of Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and North West, residents can expect good weather with temperatures ranging from cool to warm, providing pleasant winter conditions. Free State will remain good and cool throughout the day, and the Northern Cape is expected to have cloudy conditions and patches of morning fog in the western and southern parts before the weather improves to clear.

Coastal and Eastern weather

In the Western Cape, cloudiness and morning fog are expected in the west, but conditions will gradually improve to partly cloudy and cool weather as the day progresses. Similar foggy phenomena are forecast for some parts of the western Eastern Cape in the morning, followed by clear and cool weather. The eastern half of the Eastern Cape should remain good and cool all day, while KwaZulu-Natal will enjoy dry weather, although colder conditions are expected in the southwestern parts of the province.

UV index and general forecasts

The South African Weather Service reported moderate levels of sunburn risk for Gauteng and the Western Cape, while KwaZulu-Natal will face a very high UVB index, meaning that residents spending extended time outdoors should take precautions against sun exposure despite the winter season.

As no significant weather systems are affecting the country, Tuesday promises to be another day of calm winter weather, offering clear skies in most regions and favorable conditions for travel, outdoor activities, and agricultural work.
