GWM is about to globally launch a new four-cylinder inline turbodiesel engine, model 3.0, which may be incorporated into the brand's national lineup. This development aims to overcome criticisms received by previous models, such as the GWM Poer P30 and the Haval H9, which offered 184 hp and 48.9 kgfm, falling slightly short of the Brazilian diesel pickup market benchmark of 200 hp and 50 kgfm.
The new 3.0 engine, developed internally by GWM, delivers 231 hp and 63.2 kgfm. This superior performance surpasses all current four-cylinder pickups available on the market, and its torque exceeds that of the Volkswagen Amarok V6 TDI.
Launch and Application
This engine will initially be introduced in Australia, coupled with the Cannon Alpha (pickup) and Tank 500 (SUV) models. These new models represent more luxurious and robust alternatives to the Poer P30 and Haval H9, although they share a similar architecture. Although complete performance data has not yet been released, GWM assures that this 3.0 turbo diesel engine will be more fuel-efficient than the current 2.4 version.
The engine will be integrated into a nine-speed automatic transmission, which was also designed internally. Currently, confirmation of the new engine is limited to Australia and South Africa. Due to GWM's cautious approach in Brazil and its policy of avoiding frequent vehicle changes, the arrival of this 3.0 engine in the country is expected to take longer.
It is worth noting that the Poer P30 and Haval H9 arrived in Brazil in the second half of 2025, already with local production. The pickup has two sales configurations, while the SUV has an exclusive configuration. There are future plans for these vehicles to offer a plug-in hybrid flex option, utilizing the system already present in the Tank 300.
