Sandra Lavi Goykovic, with a successful corporate career and a passport stamped with numerous visas, questioned inequality: why do some people have abundance while others live in need. Today, her work supports children in thirty villages of West Bengal.
Having grown up in Switzerland, Sandra traveled extensively with her parents and observed stark social inequality around the world. As she grew older, she felt that charity was too distant from the changes she wished to bring about; she aimed to create solutions she could see, measure, and support.
In 2011, Sandra resigned from her corporate position in Dubai, taking only two shirts and two pairs of trousers, and embarked on a solo train journey across India in search of answers.
Her search led her to a profound realization: poverty is often rooted in rural areas, where poor schools, limited opportunities, and lack of support force families to migrate in search of livelihoods.
This quest eventually brought her to Sagar Island in West Bengal—a remote island accessible by train and boat. Sandra arrived without ready-made solutions and spent months listening closely to the local residents.
She visited homes, spoke with families, and asked one simple question: 'What do you need most?' The answer was almost unanimous: education. In 2012, these conversations transformed into The India School Project.
Building trust proved more difficult than building a school. Sandra personally visited villages, convincing parents to send their children to school and believe in a future they had previously been unable to imagine.
Currently, this initiative provides free primary education to 180 children. Additionally, another 180 students attending government schools receive academic support, learning materials, and nutritious daily meals.
Sandra soon realized that overcoming the cycle of poverty required help beyond just education. The organization now trains women in self-sufficiency skills and conducts awareness campaigns on child marriage, human trafficking, domestic violence, and girls' education.
Over the years, the initiative has helped develop 112 young leaders and reached nearly 20,000 people across thirty villages. Sandra considers this her life's mission and continues to dedicate herself to this work.
