The Solidarity union has entered the process of defending its members at Media24 after the media corporation sent official notifications under Section 189A as part of a proposed restructuring that could affect up to 126 jobs.
This occurred after Media24 announced last week the start of a consultation process regarding the restructuring of part of its editorial operations. The company aims to implement a more compact and consolidated working model, which is part of efforts to ensure business sustainability amid growing pressure in the media industry.
According to information from Solidarity, the restructuring affects the editorial departments and employees of several flagship brands of Media24, including News24, Netwerk24, Huisgenoot, Sarie, Kuier, Tuis/Home, Weg!/GO!, Wegry & Sleep/go! Drive & Camp, DRUM, True Love, and YOU.
The union noted that this restructuring will have the greatest impact on the editorial departments of sports and lifestyle publications in News24 and Netwerk24. Johan Russ, the labor relations organizer at Solidarity, expressed deep concern about the possible loss of editorial expertise in publications such as Huisgenoot and Sarie, as well as in the sports and lifestyle departments of well-known titles.
Russ stated that alternative solutions would be found, and Solidarity would examine all reasonable options to prevent or minimize layoffs. The union confirmed the start of consultations with Media24 to protect the interests of its members and intends to thoroughly examine the company's business justification for carrying out the restructuring.
Solidarity stated that it is the largest union at Media24. For its part, Media24 emphasized that the proposed changes are aimed at optimizing editorial processes and ensuring the long-term viability of its media division, but the company specified that the proposed structures are not yet final and depend on the results of the Section 189A consultation process.
