The Museum of Art Pudong (MAP), located in Shanghai, is hosting the exhibition titled 'Jean Nouvel: Without the Artist, Architecture Disappears' until August 31, 2026. This show celebrates the museum's fifth anniversary and is dedicated to the work of Jean Nouvel, a Pritzker Prize winner. It is noteworthy that this is the first time the French architect has held a solo exhibition within a building he himself designed.
Organized by the Museum of Art Pudong in collaboration with Ateliers Jean Nouvel, the exhibition brings together various elements such as architectural models, films, archival documents, and installations. A highlight is the reconstruction of the architect's studio in Paris, aiming to analyze more than fifty years of his professional career.
Instead of treating the museum merely as a neutral space for display, the project integrates the building itself into the narrative of the show. The Museum of Art Pudong, conceived by Nouvel between 2015 and 2021, was designed as a cultural landscape extending towards the Huangpu River, reinforcing the connection between architecture, the city, and public space. During the exhibition period, new audiovisual interventions and site-specific installations highlight the building's role in Nouvel's exploration of themes such as light, perception, and context.
The exhibition title is inspired by the subtitle of Nouvel's 2025 publication, 'Jean Nouvel: Mes Convictions,' focusing on the development of architectural concepts parallel to completed projects. Drawings, conceptual studies, and archival materials document ventures across five continents. Additionally, the reconstruction of the Ateliers Jean Nouvel office in Paris provides access to interview recordings and digital project archives. According to the organizers, the show investigates both the creative process behind the works and the link between art and architectural practice.
The exhibition presents several of Nouvel's works realized in China, alongside international pieces. Notable Chinese locations featured include the Museum of Art Pudong, the Shanghai Start Museum, Tencent's headquarters in Guangzhou, and the Shenzhen Opera House. Architectural models from the Philharmonie de Paris, the National Museum of Qatar, and the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain - Palais Royal are also displayed, accompanied by their respective documentation and drawings. Furthermore, materials from Nouvel's Emergences series showcase conceptual studies for built and unbuilt projects, such as the Tour Sans Fins and Tête Défense.
Since founding his firm in the early 1970s, Jean Nouvel has developed projects in cultural, civic, commercial, and residential areas. His style is characterized by the ability to respond to the particularities of each location, giving great importance to context, light, and materiality. Throughout his career, he has received global recognition, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2000, the Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects, the Praemium Imperiale, and the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2008.
Other recent shows have explored different aspects of architecture. As part of the Barcelona program as World City of Architecture UNESCO-UIA, the show Parlour Gardens: Dreams from the Rooftop displays ceramic landscaping installations created by 14 international architects and landscape designers, revisiting the concept of miniature gardens. In Berlin, Aedes presents 'A Structure of Feeling: On a New Generation of Architects in China,' gathering nine firms that analyze contemporary methods of urban transformation. Concurrently, the show Architects of Liberation: Modernism in West Africa, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, examines modern architecture in seven West African nations following their independence periods.
