A rugby match contested between The Settlers High from Bellville and Fairmont High from Durbanville was halted abruptly after a referee intervened due to an alleged racial slur being used during the game on Saturday, August 1.
It has been reported that a student from Fairmont High School reportedly directed the k-word toward a student representing The Settlers High.
Footage from the match, which has circulated widely across social media platforms, captured a voice stating: “I think I need both coaches here. There was a k-word going on here, and I won’t tolerate it. I am going to call the game, unfortunately. I can’t be part of racism, guys. Do you understand? Call the coaches for me.”
This incident provoked significant public outcry on social media, with numerous users demanding that appropriate measures be taken against the student or students responsible.
Both educational institutions have subsequently informed their respective communities of learners and parents that they are initiating investigations into the situation.
In a formal communication, the principal of Fairmont High School acknowledged the regrettable event that transpired during the interschool contest. The principal assured the community that the issue is being handled with the highest degree of seriousness and will undergo a comprehensive review in adherence to established school policies, relevant legislation, and proper procedural guidelines.
Furthermore, Fairmont High School urged its community members not to disseminate or comment on unconfirmed information or content on social media, warning that such actions might jeopardize the investigation's integrity. The school reiterated its dedication to resolving the matter in a fair, objective manner, prioritizing the best interests of all students involved.
Similarly, The Settlers High School issued a joint declaration from its principal, management team, and school governing body (SGB). This statement indicated that the matter is being regarded with extreme gravity and guaranteed its community a thorough inquiry. The school also requested that the community refrain from sharing, commenting on, or spreading unsubstantiated details, especially on social media, as this could potentially undermine the investigation's validity.
