The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), an agency under the Department of Migrant Workers, offers two scholarship programs for qualified dependents of OFWs who are active members of OWWA. This agency provides support and services to overseas workers and their families.
The OFW Dependent Scholarship Program (ODSP) provides up to 20,000 Philippine Pesos (Dh1,200) annually, while the Education Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) offers up to 60,000 Philippine Pesos (Dh3,600) per year to high school graduates who successfully pass a qualifying exam administered by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
According to the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), this year two students from the province of Palawan were selected for the EDSP program and are currently receiving scholarship benefits.
During the Kapihan sa PIA forum on July 29, OWWA-Palawan Family Welfare Officer Adignita Elizang stated that the agency has helped many students complete their studies, with some graduates becoming doctors, engineers, and other professionals.
In Palawan alone, about 70 new scholarship recipients were accepted into the OWWA program in 2025, in addition to those who received assistance in previous years.
To apply, the applicant must be single, and the parent or sibling working abroad must have active membership in OWWA. Elizang also clarified that scholarship recipients can continue to receive financial assistance until graduation, even if their overseas working parent stops working after their admission to the program.
She strongly urged OFWs to maintain their active OWWA membership to retain the right to participate in the agency's programs and services. New workers are automatically registered during the process of securing their overseas employment through the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), and membership remains valid for two years or the duration of the contract, whichever comes first.
Interested applicants should monitor the official OWWA website for the opening of the online application period. Since scholarship slots are limited, students are advised to prepare their documents in advance and ensure that the OFW family member's membership is active before applying.
