A new major amateur golf tournament, Icons Cup South Africa, will take place in South Africa in December. This debut tournament will be held at the exclusive Links at Fancourt in George and will gather legends from various sports for competition on the course.
The competitions will be held in a team match format between the South Africa Team and the World Team from December 11 to 13. After confirming all participants, a total of 28 players will take part in the tournament.
Ernie Els, a four-time major champion, will lead the South Africa Team. Among the first players added to the host country's squad are cricket legend Proteas AB de Villiers and winner of the Rugby World Cup Springbok Furi du Prez.
Els noted that leading the South Africa team on home soil in such a magnificent venue as Fancourt is a huge honor. He added: 'We know the World Team will bring serious potential, but we are assembling a team of true South African winners. AB de Villiers and Furi du Prez are ideal first additions; they are fierce competitors who know exactly what it means to defend their home turf. We are ready to show the world how we play this game.'
The World Team will be represented by Spanish golf icon Jose Maria Olasabal. He has already attracted great player Brian Lara from the West Indies and former England football captain John Terry.
Olasabal emphasized South Africa's rich sporting heritage and that Fancourt presents a magnificent, world-class challenge for golf. However, he warned that the World Team is not coming to George for sightseeing. He stated: 'Ernie is a fantastic champion, and he will have a passionate home crowd, but I am assembling a team of icons. We will compete fiercely; we know how to win under pressure, and we are fully prepared to spoil the home party this December.'
Additional participants will be announced later.
