The producers of the West End production 'Sunday in the Park with George' announced on Sunday that pop star Ariana Grande has withdrawn from her scheduled debut performance in London's West End.
A representative for the singer stated that Grande wishes to take a 'step back' from public life. The 33-year-old artist was originally scheduled to perform in the Stephen Sondheim musical 'Sunday in The Park with George' during the summer of 2027 at London's Barbican theater, opposite her co-star from 'Wicked,' Jonathan Bailey.
However, amidst increased public attention regarding her health, particularly on social media, her representative indicated a desire for a 'much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances' following the conclusion of her 'Eternal Sunshine' tour in London on September 1.
In a statement posted on the show's official X account, the producers confirmed Grande's decision to step away from 'Sunday in The Park with George' but did not elaborate on the specific reasons for her withdrawal. The statement added that the show will proceed as planned and that casting announcements will be made 'in due course,' concluding with well wishes for the artist.
Grande's representative informed People magazine that although the Grammy-winning artist is keen to finish her tour, she needs to reduce her visibility because her numerous public engagements have resulted in 'endless, ongoing public scrutiny.'
Fan concern for her well-being has grown, especially after a music video for 'Petal' released on Friday, where the singer appeared to have lost a significant amount of weight. Grande has previously commented that body-shaming remarks are 'really dangerous.'
Prior to her current endeavors, Grande started her career as a teenager on Broadway. Her role as Glinda in the film adaptation of 'Wicked' led to an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress. Nevertheless, the considerable success of the film and its sequel, 'Wicked: For Good,' required Grande to participate in continuous media appearances for nearly two years.
Looking ahead, she is scheduled to appear in the comedy 'Focker-in-Law' alongside Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, which is set to be released in theaters in November.
