The State Council (China's executive branch) has given the green light to projects for new nuclear reactors, each estimated to cost approximately 20 billion yuan (2.57 billion euros). All these projects are based on third-generation nuclear technologies developed in China.
The approved projects include the second phase of the Jincimen station in the eastern province of Zhejiang, the first phase of the Quanhai station in Liaoning in the northeast of the country, the third phase of the Taipinglin station in the southeastern province of Guangdong, and the first phase of the Laiyang station in the eastern province of Shandong.
The first three stations will use the Hualong One technology—a third-generation pressurized water reactor developed in China. The Laiyang station will use Guohe One, another reactor of the same type and generation, created by a Chinese company.
According to specialized Chinese press, the Jincimen II and Taipinglin III projects will also serve as demonstration units for the Hualong One 2.0 version, which is presented as an improved version with better safety and profitability metrics.
Since 2022, China has approved 49 nuclear reactors, representing total investments approaching one trillion yuan (about 128.4 billion euros). This phase of rapid expansion aligns with Beijing's goals of strengthening energy security, technological self-sufficiency, and reducing emissions.
The National Energy Administration recently reported that between 2021 and 2025, China authorized 46 nuclear power plants. Currently, 120 reactors are operating, under construction, or already approved in the country, with a total capacity of 135 million kilowatts, which is the largest in the world.
The new energy plan for the period 2026–2030 envisions the development of nuclear energy in a 'safe and orderly' manner. As the world's largest greenhouse gas emitter, China has committed to peaking carbon emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.
