Maruti Suzuki achieved record passenger car sales in India in July, increasing by 34%

In the electric vehicle sales sector, Tata Motors reached a new milestone by exceeding the monthly volume of 15 thousand units of electric vehicles wholesale for the first time. In July 2026, the company sold a total of 63,760 vehicles, including data from the domestic market (India) and exports. In July 2025, the company sold 40,175 vehicles, representing a year-on-year sales growth for Tata Motors of 58.71%. High demand was observed for both the ICE (internal combustion engine) portfolio and EVs.

Regarding the domestic market, the company sold 62,611 units in July. In July 2025, 39,521 units were sold, which is 23,090 more than last year, demonstrating a growth of 58.42%. It should be noted that in June 2026, the company sold 62,076 units.

In the EV segment, Tata achieved significant success by crossing the 15,000 monthly electric vehicle sales mark for the first time. In July 2026, 15,217 electric vehicles were sold, compared to 7,124 in July of last year. The brand's sales grew by 8,093 units, corresponding to an increase of 113.6%.

Official data on the sales of specific car models has not yet been published, so it is unknown exactly which cars were sold and in what quantity. However, according to data from the previous month, the Tata Punch and Nexon were the most in-demand. In June, 21,006 units of the Punch and 18,335 units of the Nexon were sold.

According to the Center for Economic Research and Reforms (CERC), vehicle sales in Uzbekistan exceeded 80,200 units in June. This figure demonstrates an 18% growth compared to May, with the increase recorded across all major segments of the automotive market.

Regional Sales Dynamics

According to the center's data, sales growth was observed in almost all regions of the country. The Jizzakh region was an exception, where the indicator decreased by 2.2%. The highest growth rates were noted in the Surkhandarya region (33.7%), Khorezm region (32.6%), Syrdarya region (29%), Samarkand region (28.3%), Kashkadarya region (26.2%), and Andijan region (26%). In Tashkent, sales volume increased by 9%, reaching 17,900 vehicles.

Passenger Car Market Dynamics

Sales of passenger cars for the reporting month amounted to 61,400 units, which is 14% more than in the previous month. 24,000 new cars were sold in the primary market, an 11% increase from May. Domestic manufacturers contributed the most, with their sales growing by 12% to 18,800 units. Sales of new imported cars increased by almost 7%, totaling 5,100 units.

For the first half of the year, new passenger car sales reached 157,000 units, which is 3.5% more than in the same period last year.

Secondary Market and Electric Vehicles

In the secondary market, over 37,000 used passenger cars were sold in June, a 16% increase from the previous month. This segment accounted for about 61% of the total passenger car sales. For the period from January to June, the volume of sales in the secondary market reached nearly 240,000 cars, which is 18% less than the previous year.

The electric vehicle market showed the most noticeable momentum. In June, 8,400 electric vehicles were sold in both the primary and secondary markets, a 63.5% increase over May. For the first half of the year, electric vehicle sales exceeded 40,000 units, which is 40% more compared to the same period last year.

Electric Vehicle Growth by Region

Growth in electric vehicle sales was recorded in almost all regions of the country. The Syrdarya region was an exception, where the indicator decreased by 2.9%. The largest increase was registered in the Jizzakh region (101%), Bukhara region (64.6%), and Fergana region (58.5%). Tashkent maintained its leading position in the electric vehicle market: in June, the capital accounted for about 63% of all sales, while the volume in Tashkent increased by 78% compared to May, reaching 5,300 units.

Maruti Suzuki India has decided to raise prices across all its automotive models. This increase will amount to up to 30,000 Indian rupees and will take effect from August 2026.

Reasons for the price hike

The price increase is attributed to a sustained rise in raw material costs. In regulatory filings submitted to BSE on Tuesday, the country's largest automaker stated that the price revision became necessary due to 'continuous sustained growth in raw material costs.'

The company noted that it had been making efforts over the past few months to absorb higher expenses through various cost-reduction measures. However, as inflationary pressure remains high and cost conditions continue to be unfavorable, the decision was made to pass some of the increased costs on to consumers.

Competitive market situation

Maruti Suzuki's latest price adjustment comes amid many other automakers also increasing the cost of their vehicles. For instance, Tata Motors announced a price hike of up to 1.5 percent across its entire passenger car lineup, including electric vehicles, starting July 1. Furthermore, Hyundai Motor India and Kia India have also raised prices recently. Hyundai increased the cost of its models by up to 12,800 rupees from June 1, and Kia announced a 2 percent price increase starting July 1. Both companies cited rising raw material costs, increases in commodity prices, and persistent inflationary pressure to explain these changes.
