The University of São Paulo (USP) has established a collaboration with the ride-hailing company 99, aiming to develop research focused on artificial intelligence (AI) within Brazilian territory.
This agreement seeks to promote studies that improve user experience and analyze the impact of AI on restructuring the work environment, while connecting university researchers to practical problems faced by the industrial sector.
The partnership was formalized last Tuesday, the 28th, between Anna Helena Reali Costa, director of the Polytechnic School (Poli) at USP, and Simeng Wang, CEO of 99. The institutions reported that this is the first agreement of this nature signed by 99 in the country.
This cooperation is part of the global university-industry collaboration program maintained by DiDi Chuxing, 99's parent company. Active since 2017, it involves over 70 universities in various nations and has already generated more than 300 research projects.
Two Initial Lines of Research
Initially, the collaboration will be conducted in two distinct axes of applied research:
The first axis will focus its efforts on optimizing the user experience, employing advanced AI models to continuously enhance the support offered to platform customers. The second branch will investigate how the implementation of AI agents can modify work organization, examining the structural changes caused by the use of these technologies in corporate contexts.
Eduardo Zancul, a professor at the Polytechnic School of USP and responsible for designing the cooperation at the university, emphasized that the initiative brings academic investigation closer to market needs, stating that 'The planned studies require both scientific and applied knowledge.'
Roberto Marcondes Cesar Junior, director of the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (IME-USP) and coordinator of one of the study fronts, stressed that the work will address crucial issues for the progress of AI. He declared: 'The research will be carried out in advanced areas that require new studies on the potential and impacts of artificial intelligence.'
Approximation Between University and Industry
Anna Helena Reali Costa, director of the Polytechnic School, highlighted that this partnership strengthens the link between the university's scientific production and the challenges inherent in the productive sector.
She added: 'This partnership reinforces Poli's commitment to cutting-edge research and applied innovation, connecting scientific knowledge generated at the University to real market challenges and training professionals prepared to lead the transformations brought by artificial intelligence.'
For Simeng Wang, CEO of 99, artificial intelligence already plays a fundamental role in the company's operations, and the partnership with the university has the potential to train professionals capable of driving new evolutions. He believes that 'people, the students who are graduating, can be agents of cultural change in the company, of pioneering in the transformation of work.'
Caio Poli, executive director of the user experience area at 99 and an alumnus of the Polytechnic School, mentioned that the project aims to strengthen the link between academic research and practical industry obstacles. He stated: 'The partnership with USP represents an important step toward bringing cutting-edge research closer to concrete industry challenges, accelerating the development of artificial intelligence applications, training highly qualified professionals, and contributing to strengthening the culture of innovation in Brazil. Investing in science and talent is investing in the country's future.'
Cooperation Involves USP Research Centers
The project is supported by the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (IME-USP), the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (CIAAM USP), and the USP Innovation Center (InovaUSP).
According to these institutions, the initiative is expected to help expand scientific production in the field of artificial intelligence, strengthen specialist training, and foster the emergence of new technologies in the country.
