Historians debate whether Nolan's Sea Peoples in The Odyssey are historical fact or myth

The mention of the so-called 'Sea Peoples' in Christopher Nolan's recent film about The Odyssey has reignited the debate over the existence of these groups in antiquity. Although the cinematic production presents them as a threat linked to the end of the Bronze Age, history and archaeology experts indicate that the reality is significantly more complex.

Consulted by the Bad Ancient team, a collective of researchers focused on demystifying concepts about the ancient world, the specialists refute the existence of a single invading force responsible for the decline of great civilizations in the Eastern Mediterranean between the 13th and 12th centuries BCE.

The analysis also questions the notion that the Sea Peoples constituted a cohesive and uniform people. This term, coined by 19th-century scholars, groups various groups mentioned in Egyptian records, without proof that they were a unified culture or alliance.

The Sea Peoples are historically linked to the period of major transformations in the Eastern Mediterranean, known as the Bronze Age Collapse. This process occurred between the late 13th and early 12th centuries BCE, a time when several societies experienced political, economic, and social changes.

Important affected centers included the Hittite Empire, Mycenaean Greece, and Levantine cities, such as those in Canaan. The New Kingdom of Egypt and the Middle Assyrian Empire also felt the effects of this crisis, although they managed to maintain their survival.

For a long time, the view prevailed that external groups coming from the sea attacked coastal cities, dismantled political structures, and permanently changed the region. However, this explanation is being revised by researchers examining archaeological remains and ancient documents.

The main sources on these groups come from Egypt, notably monumental inscriptions associated with Pharaohs Merneptah and Ramesses III. These records detail confrontations against possible adversarial coalitions, some of which were linked to peoples originating from other maritime areas.

According to Bad Ancient, the records do not support the idea of a single people called the 'Sea Peoples.' The name was established later by modern academics to encompass different groups identified in ancient inscriptions.

The Bad Ancient team stated in an interview with IFLScience that 'the evidence used to construct this idea of the so-called 'Sea Peoples' makes it clear that they were not a single group or culture.' The group clarified that Egyptologists have identified at least ten distinct populations associated with the term, despite ongoing discussion about their origins.

The interpretation of an external invasion also shaped old theories about cultural changes in the Mediterranean. Current researchers point out that explanations based solely on the arrival of new peoples were used in the early 20th century and ended up connected to racially unfounded theories.

Archaeology, however, reveals a less simplified picture. Despite the existence of sites with signs of conflict and destruction, experts state that many areas underwent progressive evolutions, not sudden replacement caused by invaders.

'Migration, invasion, and war are part of this process, but they are not the sole trick explaining the Bronze Age Collapse,' explained Bad Ancient to IFLScience. The team emphasized that each region faced specific circumstances and that the concept of 'collapse' can mask processes of adaptation and continuity.

The case of the Hittites illustrates this change in perspective. According to researchers, the civilization did not simply cease after the crisis but persisted in a transformed form. In Greece, Mycenaean communities also survived for a period after the fall of the palaces, generating new smaller-scale structures.

Currently, the most accepted explanation involves a combination of elements. Climate change, earthquakes, diseases, armed conflicts, and technological advances are believed to have contributed to a systemic crisis that affected various societies at different times.

In this context, maritime groups may have participated in certain episodes of combat, but would not be the primary cause of the entire regional metamorphosis. For experts, looking for a single culprit overly simplifies a historical phenomenon characterized by multiple causes.

'Simplified narratives are always suspicious,' commented the Bad Ancient team when addressing interpretations that seek to justify social difficulties with only one factor. For researchers, the same rigor must be applied to the study of ancient societies.

The connection between the Sea Peoples and The Odyssey was also questioned. In Nolan's film, the character Odysseus is presented in association with the end of the Bronze Age, in an attempt to link the mythical narrative to historical events.

Experts considered this approach controversial. For them, trying to rationalize fantastic aspects of Greek tradition can diminish the value of the imaginative capacity contained within myths themselves.

The Bad Ancient team concluded to IFLScience: 'Instead of accepting that ancient Greeks could create stories with a centaur or a wooden horse, we try to discover what might have inspired these inventions.' The researchers argued that mythical narratives can exist as manifestations of creativity, without necessarily hiding real facts.
