Scientists have discovered a celestial body located 73 light-years from Earth, but its exact nature remains unknown. This newly found object is generating significant interest in the scientific community because astronomers cannot definitively classify it as either a planet or a moon, as it appears to challenge the very definitions of these categories.
The reason lies in its unique orbital dynamics: the body orbits a brown dwarf. Brown dwarfs are substellar objects that are larger than gas planets but smaller than small stars. They are called 'failed stars' because they are unable to sustain the nuclear fusion characteristic of the Sun and are therefore not true stars.
This brown dwarf, in turn, orbits a larger star named CD-35 2722, which is also located approximately 73 light-years from Earth. This feature distinguishes the object from everything previously known in the Solar System, explaining the difficulties in its categorization by astronomers.
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) defines a planet as an object that must meet three criteria: orbit a star, be massive enough for its gravity to form a spherical structure, and be the most massive body in its orbit. An exoplanet is a planet with these characteristics but located outside the Solar System, and an exomoon is a natural satellite orbiting an exoplanet.
However, the discovered object does not fit any of these definitions. It is not an exomoon because it does not orbit a planet or exoplanet, as it does not orbit a star. The complexities of this new finding were detailed in a study published in the journal Nature. As an exact classification is pending, it has been given the provisional name 'exosatellite' because it is a satellite orbiting a brown dwarf.
Kevin Hoy, the study's author, stated in an interview with Science News: 'The structure of CD-35 is so different from the structure of our Solar System that all the words we have invented to describe celestial bodies simply stop working.'
Hoy and his colleagues believe that the size of this satellite suggests a probable gaseous composition rather than a rocky or metallic one. Nevertheless, many questions remain unanswered.
Mary Ann Limbach, an astronomer from the University of Michigan who was not involved in the study, believes the term 'exosatellite' is appropriate. She noted to Physics World: 'Astronomy needs language for celestial bodies that do not fit perfectly into the traditional categories of 'planet' and 'moon', and 'satellite' seems like the broadest term.'
Since 1992, astronomers worldwide have discovered and cataloged over six thousand exoplanets. It would be logical to expect the discovery of exomoons orbiting these planets; however, no such object has yet been confidently identified. The initial reaction of researchers was to classify the new celestial body as an exomoon. But since it does not orbit an exoplanet and possesses a mass comparable to Jupiter's, the hypothesis was rejected.
Other researchers not involved in this study argue that it is simply a planet, even if it orbits a brown dwarf instead of a star. This is the view of astronomer Nader Haghipour from the University of Hawaii to Sky & Telescope. Hoy welcomes the discussion on nomenclature, stating: 'A star is clearly a star. A brown dwarf is clearly a brown dwarf. Now we have this new object that is too large to be a moon.'
