Work continues in Kyrgyzstan on the construction of a railway line that will connect China, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. This project is estimated at approximately $4.7 billion and is intended to form a new transport corridor between China and Central Asian countries, as well as significantly expand the potential for international freight transport.
Route and technical features of the project
The railway route will pass through several settlements: Kashgar, Torugart, Arpa, Makmal, Jalal-Abad, and Andijan. The most complex section is considered to be about 305 kilometers long, located in the mountainous region of Kyrgyzstan, and requires the construction of numerous tunnels and bridges.
The project provides for the creation of a single-track railway line that can be electrified in the future. According to plans, passenger trains will be able to develop speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour, and freight trains up to 90 kilometers per hour.
Progress of construction work
All necessary infrastructure has been created to ensure work in hard-to-reach areas, including temporary roads, power supply lines, construction camps, warehouses, laboratories, and concrete plants.
Special attention is paid to tunnel construction. Work is underway on 26 objects, and so far 13.5 kilometers of the main tunnel excavations have been completed, which accounts for approximately 13% of the total volume. In addition, auxiliary shafts are being built on 12 sections, with more than half of the planned 24.4 kilometers already completed.
Simultaneously, the formation of the railway track is progressing: work is underway on 83 out of 107 planned sections. The volume of earthworks completed has reached about 19.6 million cubic meters out of the planned 56.1 million cubic meters.
Bridge and station construction
Bridge construction is also actively underway: out of 50 objects totaling 15.18 kilometers, work has started on 38 bridges. 2,398 foundation piles have already been installed, concreting of pile caps has been completed on 191 piers, and the bodies of 65 piers have been fully erected.
The project plans for the construction of Torugart, Makmal, and Jalal-Abad stations, as well as 20 additional railway stations. Makmal station is designated as a key facility where a large transport and logistics hub will be created, equipped with terminals, warehouses, service, and production sites.
Significance for regional transport
Upon completion, this railway line will provide a shorter land route between China and Central Asia. For Uzbekistan, the implementation of the project will open up new opportunities for developing transit transport, allow an increase in the volume of freight traffic, and provide access to new international destinations.
