BYD has introduced an innovative feature in its sports vehicle, the Denza Z9: a driving mode that enables the car to execute controlled drifts autonomously. In this mode, the driver does not need to intervene on the steering wheel or pedals during the maneuver.
Drift system operation
According to the Chinese manufacturer, this system represents the first technology of its kind in the world and is already available as standard equipment in all Denza Z models equipped with the e3 sports platform, which features three electric motors.
To activate this function, the driver simply traces the exact shape of the desired trajectory on the vehicle's central screen, whether it is a circle or an eight. After the drawing, the car automatically initiates the drift, replicating the specified path.
Operation control and limitations
Throughout the maneuver, the driver is required to keep their hands off the steering wheel and feet off the pedals, as total control is managed by the vehicle's electronic system. The operation is achieved through a control completely independent of the rear wheels and active steering of the rear axle, which allows for continuous provocation and management of tire grip loss and recovery, maintaining the drift with precision without human commands.
However, BYD emphasizes that the feature does not have the capability to automatically avoid obstacles while drifting. Therefore, after defining the route, the software strictly follows the programmed path. For this reason, the manufacturer advises that this function should only be used on closed circuits or designated tracks to prevent any risk of accident.
Safety and performance of the Denza Z
Despite the sporty appeal of the drift mode, BYD emphasizes that the technology was primarily designed to improve safety. During the maneuver, the system constantly monitors variables such as road adhesion, tire slip angle, and body inclination, ensuring vehicle balance.
The company reports that the same algorithms responsible for controlling an intentional drift are capable of correcting unexpected slips at high speeds faster than a driver could. Furthermore, the Denza Z is offered in four body styles: coupe, convertible with canvas top, sport wagon, and sedan. Its most powerful version uses the e3 platform with its three electric motors, generating an impressive 1,582 horsepower (equivalent to 1,604 metric hp), allowing the sports car to reach 97 km/h in just 1.96 seconds, classifying it among hypercars and making it the fastest model ever manufactured by BYD.
