At the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland, an impressive display of Indian athletes' skill continues. Indian weightlifting star Lavpreet Singh won a silver medal for his country in the men's +110 kg weight division final.
Weightlifting Results
Lavpreet Singh lifted a total of 388 kilograms, securing second place. His performance included a lift of 176 kilograms in the snatch round and 212 kilograms in the clean and jerk round.
The Fight for Gold
After the snatch competition, David Lity from New Zealand trailed Lavpreet by a full 10 kilograms. However, in the second clean and jerk round, David lifted 223 kilograms, setting a new Commonwealth Games record. Ultimately, by lifting a total of 389 kilograms, he edged out Lavpreet by just 1 kilogram to win the gold medal.
Lavpreet Singh's Comments
Expressing his disappointment at missing gold by only 1 kilogram, Lavpreet Singh told ANI: 'There is pain in not winning the gold medal. Naturally, when you lose gold, it hurts. I will show even better results in upcoming competitions, such as the Asian Games.'
He also mentioned that he wants to dedicate this medal to his coach Vidjyu Sharma, India's national weightlifting advisor, the Government of India, and Navy Captain Vidjyu Kumar, thanking everyone who supported him.
Athletics Achievements
Positive news also came from the running and field events sector. In the women's discus throw final, Indian athlete Sima Kaliraman won a bronze medal, throwing the disc 58.65 meters. This success allowed India to begin winning medals in athletics.
