Spotify officially announced on Thursday (07/30) the launch of Running Mode, a new feature aimed at those who listen to music during physical activities. This feature uses artificial intelligence to create playlists that suit both training goals and the user's musical preferences.
Availability and Initial Reach
The new feature is already available to Premium subscribers in the iPhone app, but access is limited to seven specific markets: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden. Currently, there are no plans for a launch in Brazil or for Android devices.
According to the official statement, the purpose of this tool is to solve a common challenge faced by people who exercise: reducing the time spent searching for the ideal track and increasing the time dedicated to physical activity.
How Running Mode Works
To use this feature, eligible users must access the Fitness Hub, a health-dedicated area introduced this April. Inside it, you will find Running Mode, which presents an interface with specific controls for aerobic activities.
Instead of generating a random music selection, the platform offers predefined programs that serve as a starting point for the athlete. The algorithm adjusts the music choice according to the selected training method, whether it is a constant pace run or an interval run. Furthermore, beats per minute (BPM) can be configured to synchronize the sound with the cadence of the steps.
Users also have the option to specify the duration of the exercise and the preferred music genre, such as rock, pop, or electronic. AI ensures that transitions between tracks are smooth, avoiding interruptions that could break the running rhythm or distract the individual.
In addition to automated music curation, the feature includes optional audio cues. It acts as a virtual coach, providing guidance and alerts about the phases of the physical activity, and Spotify assures that these insertions do not harm music playback. Currently, this narration is only available in English.
Difference from Spotify Running
Synchronizing music with exercise is not a recent innovation. In 2015, the streaming service launched Spotify Running, which had the same objective but was discontinued in 2018. The main distinction lies in how user data is collected.
The old Spotify Running relied on the hardware sensors of the smartphone itself, such as the accelerometer, to automatically identify the running pace. Running Mode, on the other hand, does not try to estimate speed through the device's movement in the pocket; instead, the user themselves configures their playlist, setting goals and the style of the workout.
