The startup Sarvam, which specializes in sovereign artificial intelligence, has recruited Devendra Chaplot, a member of the founding team at Mistral AI, as an advisor. This decision was made in connection with the company's global expansion and the development of a trillion-parameter foundational model.
Conference and Advisor Appointment
This was announced at Sarvam's first developer conference, Epoch 2026, held in Bengaluru. Devendra Chaplot, who is based in Palo Alto, California, previously worked at Thinking Machines Lab—an AI startup founded by Mira Murati, former CTO of OpenAI. He later joined Elon Musk's xAI.
Stance on AI Development in India
Participating in the conference, Chaplot emphasized that India must develop its own capacity to train models instead of relying on global cutting-edge AI models. He noted that this is particularly relevant given the country's linguistic, cultural, and educational diversity, as well as its political requirements.
Kumar, representing Sarvam, introduced Chaplot, stating that the company aims to create world-class models competitive globally, and that part of this goal is ensuring that outstanding minds working in various global companies also create solutions for India.
Model Creation Accessibility
Chaplot refuted the common notion that creating advanced models requires enormous resources or a large number of experienced specialists. He stated that a small group of motivated and talented people, who are abundant in India, is sufficient. His goal is to create models tailored to India's needs, so they must be built locally.
He added that the model itself is not the ultimate goal; the main objective is the capability to build models. Developing expertise in research, infrastructure, and data will allow Indian companies, governments, developers, and researchers to independently create and customize models for their needs. Furthermore, Chaplot is convinced that building frontier-scale models in India is achievable with the appropriate computational infrastructure.
Sarvam Products and Pricing
Sarvam also announced the development of a trillion-parameter foundational model in India. The company presented the pricing for its flagship model, Sarvam 105B, which costs $0.80 per million mixed tokens. This makes it one of the most economical options compared to the prices of OpenAI GPT-5.4 Mini ($4.50) and Gemini 3.5 Flash ($9).
The company reported that for those developing voice products, Sarvam offers the fastest, most scalable, and cheapest solution. In addition to language models, Sarvam also announced the commercial availability of Sarvam Vision Edge—its document intelligence platform.
