Prime Minister Laualialemalietoa Schmidt stated that after several months of consultations, his government decided to withdraw recognition and support for the national rugby union Lakapi Samoa. He specified that this decision entails the cessation of all financial aid and support previously provided to Lakapi Samoa.
Requirements for the Union
Laualialemalietoa added that the union was given sufficient time to resolve internal disagreements and divisions affecting the union's management. These issues were raised by former players and coaches and are linked to the declining standing of Samoan rugby on the world stage.
Search for an Alternative and Global Rugby Reaction
The Samoan government spent several months discussing the creation of a new National Rugby Union of Samoa that could compete with Lakapi Samoa. The publication Samoan Observer reported that World Rugby gave the government 24 hours to reconsider its decision and accept the proposed review, otherwise facing a four-year ban from international matches.
However, World Rugby denied the existence of any deadline or threat of a long ban. A World Rugby representative told the AFP agency that they are engaged in an active and constructive dialogue with all parties and are focused on a positive resolution to the situation.
