Dr. Zamambo Mhize, a senior lecturer at the African Gender Institute of the University of Cape Town, has been selected to represent South Africa at the International Tennis Federation World Championship Masters Tour in Lisbon, Portugal, in August 2026.
Career and Achievements
In November 2025, Dr. Mhize climbed to the top spot in South Africa in the women over 40 category. She will participate in both a team event from August 2nd to 8th and an individual tournament from August 10th to 15th, where she will compete against top Master level players from around the world.
For Dr. Mhize, this national selection marks a triumphant return to the international arena. Having started playing tennis at the age of six, she previously represented South Africa as a junior at 16 after successful performances in interprovincial tournaments in KwaZulu-Natal. She later received a full tennis scholarship at the University of Florida, where she competed at the highest college level while earning her bachelor's degree, and subsequently won a prestigious Fulbright scholarship to complete her doctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania.
Significance of the Selection for the Athlete
Commenting on her selection, Dr. Mhize called it a deeply significant moment. She noted that the opportunity to represent her country again in adulthood is a 'moment of complete life cycle closure.' She emphasized that this is particularly valuable because it proves that her first selection was not a coincidence, but rather the result of all her years of work and focus over the past two years.
The importance of this achievement is amplified by the fact that 2026 coincides with several personal milestones for the academic: ten years since receiving her doctorate, five years since publishing her first book, and now she has the honor of representing South Africa once more.
Dr. Mhize also expressed a sense of honor and humility, being the only African woman selected to participate and working at the African Gender Institute of the University of Cape Town. She eagerly anticipates participating in high-level competitive tennis on the international stage.
Support from Sports Organizations
Tournament coordinator for Tennis South Africa Masters Tournament, Blessing Hlomane, congratulated Dr. Mhize and praised the institution for supporting her sporting endeavors. Hlomane stated that they are also pleased to have such a wonderful athlete at the University of Cape Town. He added that Tennis South Africa values the university's support, which allows her to realize this prestigious opportunity while representing South Africa and the University of Cape Town on the world stage. The organization expressed confidence that Dr. Mhize will demonstrate the spirit of sportsmanship, professionalism, and excellence when competing against the world's top Master level players.
Future Plans
Dr. Mhize's selection highlights the dynamic intersection of academic brilliance and athletic achievement at the University of Cape Town. Following the campaign in Portugal, her busy sporting schedule will continue at home: she has also been selected to represent the Western Cape province in the interprovincial Masters tournament in Gauteng from September 9th to 13th, 2026.
