Arthur Zwane, head coach of AmaZulu, shared his opinion with press representatives ahead of the start of the new season of the Betway Premiership football league in Johannesburg. He expressed confidence that the club has long deserved to add trophies to its collection.
Expectations for the New Season
Zwane spoke during the presentation of the Betway Premiership new season in Johannesburg on Wednesday. He emphasized that the club must win a trophy this season. Furthermore, he noted that maintaining fan support depends to some extent on victories.
Last season, AmaZulu demonstrated consistent play over 30 matches, finishing fourth, but they lacked the determination to overtake Kaizer Chiefs. Zwane stated: 'It is quite important. If you want people to support and follow you, you have to start winning. And trophies, you know, are one of the very important things for every club in the PSL.'
Goals and Squad Strengthening
The coach added that since AmaZulu has always been present in the league, it is time to start winning cups and competing with the best. He expressed hope for positive developments in the current season, although he did not specify which cup they might lift. The team began pre-season training successfully by winning the Premier Cup for the second consecutive year and confirming its presence in KwaZulu-Natal. However, the goal for CEO Sandile Zungu and Zwane is a stronger national presence.
To achieve these goals, the team brought in national team strategist Sincesipo Mali, who will help align the club's goals and resources for the season. Zwane highly praised this move, noting: 'It is very important to have someone of this caliber. He is very experienced and will bring huge benefit to the club.'
Season Start and Upcoming Matches
AmaZulu starts the new season on Saturday against Sekhukhune United at Parow Park Stadium in Cape Town (the match begins at 15:00). Recent statistics for the club against Stellies are concerning. In the last five encounters, Usuthu secured only one victory, which was achieved in the league last year with a score of 2:1. A year earlier, AmaZulu suffered a heavy 5:0 defeat under Zwane's management.
