Taarik Stokes, a fitness trainer and community activist, applies principles of health, hope, and service to inspire the new generation of Wentworth residents.
Community Work and Initiatives
When over two thousand people took to the streets of Wentworth for a vibrant run as part of a community event, it became more than just a successful sporting occasion. It served as a powerful reminder of what happens when a community unites for a common goal.
At the heart of this movement was 27-year-old fitness trainer and entrepreneur Taarik Stokes, whose growing community projects bring fresh energy and positive change to his hometown. The founder of Team Stokes Fitness is known for combining physical fitness with social upliftment.
From completing a challenging 704 km run from Johannesburg to Durban to raise awareness about men's mental health, to organizing wellness programs for children and the recent Wentworth Colour Run—Stokes has set out a mission to create opportunities that instill hope, unity, and positive change.
Personal Journey and Motivation
Stokes, who was born and raised in Wentworth, notes that his life path was shaped by both challenges and resilience. Although his family lived in Sydenham for about ten years, they returned to Wentworth during his childhood. After his parents separated, he and his brother were primarily raised by his mother.
He recalls: 'Watching my mother work so hard to provide for us, I learned resilience, self-sacrifice, and perseverance.' He added: 'I dedicated my life to fitness, community development, and creating opportunities that inspire hope and positive change.'
As an adult, he witnessed many social issues in the area, including poverty, violence, and addiction. However, these experiences also showed him another side of his neighbourhood. He explained: 'I saw incredible resilience, love, and community spirit.' These events taught him that circumstances should not define your future. They prompted him to remain humble and maintain a positive outlook, no matter what.
The Turning Point and the Run
Stokes believes that the death of his grandfather in 2022 was a turning point, after which he began to deeply reflect on the direction of his life. He stated: 'I realized I didn't want to die without using the gifts given to me by God to help and serve others.' Instead of asking what Wentworth could do for him, he started asking: 'What can I do for Wentworth?'
This philosophy became the driving force behind the first Wentworth Colour Run, which was organized to raise funds for the non-profit organization YESS to support free educational services for local children. Organizers initially expected between 300 and 500 participants but were amazed when over 2000 residents came out to paint the streets with bright colours.
Over 2000 participants took part in the first Wentworth Colour Run, organized by Taarik Stokes and his team, turning the streets into a celebration of unity, health, and community spirit. Stokes noted: 'The response was overwhelming.' He expressed hope that everyone left with the conviction that Wentworth is capable of hosting world-class events, and that together they can achieve incredible things. 'We expressed our love, unity, and peace. For a few hours, people forgot their problems and simply enjoyed spending time together. That is something I will never forget.'
Vision for the Community's Future
Stokes believes that the perception of Wentworth as a place associated with crime and hardship does not reflect the true character of the community. He emphasized: 'People often focus on the problems without acknowledging the incredible people who live here.' He added that some of the smartest, most resilient, and generous people live in Wentworth, and this side of the community deserves more attention.
Stokes plans to turn Team Stokes Fitness into one of South Africa's leading community fitness organizations, expanding youth programs, health initiatives, and charitable activities across the country. He stated: 'I want every child to know that their background should never limit where they can go.' He concluded: 'We are born to serve, and in service we find purpose. If our youth choose hope over hopelessness, solutions over complaints, and good character above all else, then we have already begun to change the story of Wentworth.' For Taarik Stokes, fitness has always been not just about strengthening the body, but about building stronger communities, proving that long-term change begins when ordinary people decide to serve.
