The panel identified three structural advantages for the development of world models in China, despite computational power limitations. Although Chinese companies typically have access to only a quarter or one-fifth of the computing resources compared to comparable American firms, data costs are significantly lower due to a rich data supply chain created by over 200–500 domestic robotics companies. More important is the unprecedented coordination of the hardware ecosystem. Qi Xiaowei cited an example from Shenzhen where a hardware team arrived within ten minutes of a phone call following a robot failure during testing. This density of vertical integration, where software developers, hardware manufacturers, and component suppliers are within walking distance, ensures an iteration speed unattainable in more geographically dispersed ecosystems. Discussion participants concluded that these conditions could give rise to truly world-class model-developing companies.
The technical divergence centers on architectural efficiency. While world model research in the US focused on scaling computational power, Chinese teams concentrated on creating efficient architectures that maximize limited resources. The Shengshu MOS architecture, which includes three expert modules for language, video, and actions, demonstrated capabilities for cross-task and cross-embodiment migration. The MotoBrain model, built on the Vidu Q3 video generation model, achieved results on public benchmarks that were unmatched. EvoPhys.ai's approach emphasizes training based on primary physical interaction data rather than language pre-training, arguing that the current paradigm of AI based on internet-trained language models learning physics is evolutionarily regressive. The general consensus was that competition in the world model field would be won through architectural efficiency and data utilization, not raw computational scale.
The world model is dubbed the 'Tai Mountain' of AI—the most high-dimensional compression that goes beyond language. Robotics serves as the sole verification method, creating a symbiosis between world models and embodied intelligence. China's leadership without the need to follow American standards presents both an opportunity and a risk: it is a positioning of the first move in uncertain markets, but it entails the full cost of research.
