Naples has transformed its subway stations into true underground art galleries, where platforms and corridors are decorated with works by masters such as Anish Kapoor, William Kentridge, and others.

The Stazioni dell'Arte Concept

In more than twenty stops of Naples' transport system, visitors can discover one of the so-called stazioni dell’arte. This city project is known for turning stations into authentic art galleries using mosaics, paintings, sculptures, and installations.

Newest and Most Famous Stations

The newest example of this Neapolitan tradition is the Monte Sant'Angelo station, opened in September 2025 and designed under the direction of Anish Kapoor on the seventh line. However, other stops in the city's metro are also notable, including Toledo and Dante.

Toledo Station: History and Art

Toledo Station, opened in 2012, is considered one of the most famous stops on the Naples metro. Located beneath Toledo Street, it frequently ranks among the world's most beautiful stations. Upon its opening, the project received an award from the International Association of Tunneling, known as the 'Oscar' for underground structures. The project was designed by Spanish architect Óscar Tusquets.

The station's popularity is due not only to its beauty but also to how the artistic solutions reflect the architectural necessity that arose during construction. Work was delayed because equipment discovered an unexpected underground aquifer during excavation. When it came time to decorate the space, the water became a constant source of inspiration.

The mosaics attract attention right at the entrance. They were conceived by William Kentridge and executed by Costantino Aureliano Boccolieri. The first works on the walls draw inspiration from drawings found in the mosaics of Pompeii ruins, located near Naples, referencing the region's culture and traditions.

Even more famous are the mosaics on the ceiling of Toledo Station, above the escalators. The so-called 'Light Crater' allows sunlight to penetrate, which reflects off blue tiles and is further emphasized by strategically placed LEDs. The deeper the visitor descends underground, the more intense the blue hues of the ceiling become, reminiscent of diving into water depths—precisely the obstacle that slowed down the station's completion.

Dante Station: A Tribute to the Writer

Located beneath Dante Square (Dante Alighieri), which commemorates the author of the 'Divine Comedy,' this station, opened in 2002, pays tribute to the writer but is not limited to him. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a neon sign featuring excerpts from 'Convivio,' a recognized work by the author, although it is less known than the 'Divine Comedy.'

Further inside the station, designed by architect Gaetano Alenti, other artworks catch the eye. One of the most famous is an anonymous piece by Giannis Kounellis, consisting of metal pieces resembling rails that seem to crush shoes, toy trains, hats, and other clothing items. Many interpret this work as an image of lost journeys.

Another frequently photographed object at Dante Station is the mural by Nicola De Maria titled 'Universo senza bombe, regno dei fiori. 7 angeli rossi' (Universe without bombs, kingdom of flowers. 7 red angels), which welcomes visitors at one of the station entrances.
