BMA suspends operations at Qacha's Nek border post due to heavy snowfall

Authorities in the KwaZulu-Natal province are on high alert due to snowfall in the Drakensberg areas and heavy rains threatening floods in many parts of the province. Emergency services are prepared to respond promptly to dangerous weather conditions.

Road Network Monitoring

Siboniso Duma, MEC for Transport and Human Settlements in KwaZulu-Natal, reported that officials are closely monitoring the province's road network, paying special attention to key routes that may be affected by snow and floods. Grader operators have been put on standby to clear snow before it accumulates more than 30 centimeters.

Furthermore, authorities are closely observing the Van Reenen Pass between Harrismith and Ladysmith to determine if road closures are necessary. Duma noted: 'The Van Reenen Pass between Harrismith and Ladysmith is under close observation to ensure road closure where necessary. This will help prevent drivers from getting stuck on the N3 highway. Coastal and low-lying areas with informal settlements are also being monitored closely.'

Weather Warnings and Risks

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a series of warnings because the low-pressure system has led to widespread rain, snowfall, and frost in several provinces. An Orange Level 6 warning for destructive rains has been issued between East London in the Eastern Cape and Cape Vidal in KwaZulu-Natal. Flooding is expected to affect roads, bridges, and settlements, and may damage infrastructure and property.

SAWS also warned that heavy snowfall over the northeastern highlands of the Eastern Cape and the Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal could cause transport disruptions, interruptions to essential services, and temporary isolation of some communities.

Emergency Preparedness

To prepare for potential flood evacuations, the provincial Department of Human Settlements, in collaboration with the eThekwini municipality, has prepared over 170 rooms at the recently acquired Monklaer Lodge to accommodate families who may be forced to leave their homes.

Duma also stated that work continues on creating flood-resilient infrastructure, including the repair of the Quarry Heights bridge, which was partially damaged during the devastating floods of 2022. Gabions are being installed to prevent further soil erosion, and engineers have placed culverts on several bridges to reduce water accumulation, which often leads to flooding.

The meteorological service forecasts very cold and humid conditions with light snowfall expected from Wednesday evening in parts of the Eastern Cape, southern KwaZulu-Natal, southern Free State, and along the Lesotho border, after which conditions will begin to improve from the west on Thursday. Farmers were advised to take preventive measures to protect livestock and crops from frost.

Although the peak of the system is expected by the end of this week, SAWS predicts that cold weather will persist in eastern South Africa on Thursday and Friday, with isolated or scattered rain expected in some areas. Drivers are strongly advised to monitor weather updates, avoid flooded roads, and exercise extreme caution when traveling through affected regions.

Following a Wednesday marked by wind gusts exceeding 120 km/h and their impacts on the South and Southeast regions, the climate scenario begins to show changes this Thursday, the 30th. Although the cold front is weakening, it still causes instabilities, moderate winds, and areas with low humidity across the national territory.

Causes of intense winds

The advance of the cold front through the South-Central region continues towards the ocean, resulting in a gradual decrease in wind intensity. However, gusts close to 50 km/h are still possible in parts of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Mato Grosso do Sul, and along the coast of the Southern Region. According to meteorologist César Soares, from Climatempo, this event was caused by the clash between the heat and dry air predominant in the Southeast and the mass of cold air moving through the South.

Soares explained to G1 that the Brazilian Southeast presented conditions of accentuated heat and dryness, contrasting with the presence of the cold front in the South of the country, which managed to move to other areas. This encounter of different air masses facilitated the formation of the so-called gust front, a phenomenon capable of generating strong winds even before the arrival of the most heavily precipitating zones.

Climate situation in the South

Climate conditions are becoming more stable in Rio Grande do Sul and in most of Santa Catarina. However, in Paraná, there are still forecasts for showers, thunderstorms, and potential for storms, especially in the western and inland regions of the state. Despite the reduction in rainfall, the Gaucho rivers remain under monitoring, as levels are high due to the volume accumulated in previous days, which maintains the risk of new rises and overflows in the Uruguay, Guaíba, Taquari, and Caí basins.

The main predicted points include the possibility of storms in Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, and inland São Paulo, as well as gusts of up to 50 km/h in areas of the Southeast and on the South coast. There are also alerts for humidity indices below 20% in parts of the Center-West, Southeast, Northeast, and North. For Friday, strong winds above 60 km/h are expected in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.

While instabilities decrease in certain locations, dry air takes over in the interior of Brazil. Inmet continues to issue warnings about relative humidity below 20% in Goiás, Federal District, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, western Bahia, and Tocantins. In the North Region, rains tend to concentrate in Amazonas, Roraima, Amapá, and Pará. In the Northeast, precipitation is more likely to occur on the coast, while the interior remains under the influence of dry weather.

The current trend points to atmospheric cooling. In this process, the winds naturally lose strength, since the great thermal and humidity contrast no longer exists. César Soares, a meteorologist from Climatempo, reinforced to G1 that, as the atmosphere reaches equilibrium, extreme winds lose intensity, but Inmet's alerts remain crucial for areas that may face storms, strong winds, or low humidity.

According to the Hydrometeorological Service of the Republic of Uzbekistan, on July 31, variable cloudiness without precipitation is expected in Tashkent. The wind from the east will blow at a speed of 3-8 meters per second. The night temperature will be 23-25 degrees Celsius, and during the day—37-39 degrees Celsius.

Weather in Karakalpakstan and Khorezm

In the Bukhara and Navoi regions, the weather will be cloudy with no precipitation. The wind from the east will blow at a speed of 7-12 m/s, with the possibility of intensifying up to 13-18 m/s in some places due to dust storms. Night temperatures will be 22-27 degrees, and daytime temperatures—generally 38-43 degrees, and 30-33 degrees in desert zones.
