China's coastal conservation initiatives have received international recognition following the official inclusion of migratory bird habitat on the Chanshan Islands in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This status applies to the migratory bird reserves along the coasts of the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea of China, reports China Daily.
The decision was approved on Monday during the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, held in Busan, South Korea. This inclusion is part of the expansion of an existing serial World Heritage site.
The new component, which includes the Chanshan Islands located in Dalian City, Liaoning Province, covers an area of over 4,900 hectares. It provides a vital habitat for more than 140 species of birds. These islands are particularly significant as they host the world's largest colony of Chinese egrets and support several nationally protected species year-round, including the black-faced spoonbill and the western Pacific spotted seal.
According to China's National Forestry and Grassland Administration, this is the second expansion of the World Heritage site, strengthening its ecological integrity and reflecting the country's comprehensive approach to conserving both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The migratory bird reserves along the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea were first inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019 as China's first coastal wetland site.
This region plays a critical role on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway migration route, providing a necessary stopover for millions of migratory birds traveling between breeding and wintering grounds. The latest addition further underscores the importance of this region as one of the world's most crucial migratory bird habitats and highlights ongoing efforts to protect biodiversity along China's coast.
As part of an ongoing habitat restoration initiative, SANParks Honorary Rangers from the Tabl Mountains region planted 1000 shrubs of the species Tetragonia decumbens in the Boulder's penguin colony.
SANParks, in partnership with SANParks Honorary Rangers in the Tabl Mountains region, carried out the planting of these shrubs. The seeds for this campaign were collected directly in the Boulder's penguin colony, then germinated in a Cape Town nursery before being replanted on site.
A SANParks representative, JP Louw, noted that this planting will help restore the natural habitat of the colony and strengthen the sand dunes. Tetragonia decumbens, also known as dune spinach or sea spinach, is a native coastal shrub growing along the South African coast. In addition to its edible leaves, this species plays a vital ecological role in maintaining healthy coastal ecosystems.
The project aims to stabilize and restore the natural environment of the colony. The shrub helps bind and strengthen the sand dunes, thereby reducing erosion and creating favorable conditions for the growth of other local plant species. These efforts contribute to forming a more resilient and healthy environment that supports African penguins and other coastal wildlife.
The initiative underscores SANParks' continuous commitment to biodiversity conservation, habitat restoration, and the long-term protection of one of the most important breeding sites for African penguins in South Africa. Louw reported that Boulder's beach, located within the Tabl Mountains National Park, has international recognition as a critically important conservation area for the endangered African penguin. It is also one of South Africa's most iconic natural attractions, attracting visitors from around the world while serving as a refuge for this species.
The Gates Foundation plans to invest R42 million into Non-Sewered Sanitation (NSS) Technologies Projects within the eThekwini Municipality.
City Manager Musa Mbhele is anticipated to finalize a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) and its Water Partnership Office (WPO) concerning the second phase of the NSS initiative. This financial support will cover the acquisition and setup of NSS technologies at specific locations throughout the municipality.
Under the terms of this arrangement, the DBSA Water Partnership Office will manage all aspects related to sourcing, supplying, installing, operating, and maintaining the sanitation technologies until the municipality formally accepts and takes ownership of these assets. The municipality, via its Water and Sanitation Directorate, will provide high-level guidance during the procurement, installation, and execution stages to ensure adherence to municipal standards and the goals set by the grant funding.
The second phase of the program is scheduled to be rolled out in two installments, starting with the deployment of NSS technologies at seven designated sites. The municipality noted that this expansion builds upon the achievements of the first phase and aligns with its wider strategy to improve access to sanitation services that are safe, resilient, and environmentally sound.
Previously, a grant agreement was established in November 2022 between the municipality and the Gates Foundation for Phase 1. This initial phase focused on enhancing disaster readiness and resilience within the municipality by implementing Reinvented Toilet (RT) sanitation technologies. Phase 1 sought to prove three different RT technologies in identified informal settlements and assess their viability as sanitation solutions for areas outside the sewer network boundaries in eThekwini.
During Phase 1, the three technologies were installed in Pholani, Kuthuleni, and Malacca Road in Durban North, incorporating features such as clear and aquatic wastewater treatment alongside new generators. Both technical and social data were gathered during the completion of Phase 1 as part of the evaluation process.
In December 2023, the Gates Foundation provided the necessary funding for Phase 2. The primary goal of this subsequent phase was to leverage the knowledge gained from Phase 1 by expanding and embedding NSS technologies over a three-year period.
The municipality indicated that the procurement framework is currently being developed and is projected to be finalized by August 2027. However, the municipality warned that failing to adhere to the agreed-upon implementation schedules could result in the forfeiture of the remaining Gates Foundation grant funds allocated for the Phase 2 scale-up.
The specific locations chosen for Phase 2 include Shewula (ward 62), Emona, Drift Road, Rainbow Ridge, Damede, Klaarwater camp, KwaBridge ward 65, Ntshingelana Way, London Farm (ward 90), Craigieburn, and Lotus Park.
The discovery of a fossil in Zimbabwe has allowed scientists to identify a new species of dinosaur named Musango matusadonaensis. This animal remains helps to understand how reptiles occupied various habitats in Southern Africa about 210 million years ago.
The species lived during the Upper Triassic period, a time when dinosaurs were actively expanding their presence across the planet and beginning to colonize new ecosystems. Musango matusadonaensis differed significantly from the giant long-necked dinosaurs that would become known later. It was lighter, measuring about 4.5 meters in length and weighing approximately 222 kilograms, comparable to the weight of an adult pig.
The animal's name comes from the Shona word 'musango,' which means 'living in bushes.' Its skeleton was found in 2018 on the shore of Lake Kariba, in northern Zimbabwe, and represents the fifth dinosaur identified in the country. Among the fossils from that time found in the region, this specimen is considered one of the most complete, as it preserved bones of the spine, ribs, arms, legs, and feet, allowing for a detailed analysis of the species' traits.
This find also casts doubt on the old hypothesis that South African dinosaurs were virtually identical across the entire territory. According to Paul Barrett, a researcher from the Natural History Museum in London, it was previously believed that these animals were very similar throughout Southern Africa. However, the analysis of Musango matusadonaensis indicates that the African region possessed diverse ecosystems with species adapted to specific conditions.
This suggests that current discoveries are only the tip of the iceberg. The study was published in the journal Journal of Systematic Palaeontology by an international group of paleontologists.
Researchers suggest that the animal reached an age of about 8 years at the time of death and was approaching adult size. The bones showed signs that it had recovered from a serious injury or infection. Since the skull was not found, the species' diet remains unknown. Nevertheless, the team believes that the dinosaur was likely herbivorous or omnivorous and fed on plants growing near rivers and streams.
The discovery highlights the significance of finds in Zimbabwe: Musango matusadonaensis lived about 210 million years ago, in the Upper Triassic; it reached a height of approximately 4.5 meters and weighed about 222 kilograms; the fossil preserved parts of the spine, ribs, arms, legs, and feet; and it is the fifth dinosaur identified in the country. Furthermore, in 2022, Mbiresaurus raathi was found in Zimbabwe, which is considered the oldest dinosaur discovered in Africa. It lived about 230 million years ago, was about 1 meter high, and weighed up to 30 kilograms. The study of Musango matusadonaensis adds a new detail to the understanding of early dinosaurs and shows that many important fossils still need to be found on the African continent.
