Renewable energy company Rhino Energy Solutions has launched a 648 kWp solar power plant at the Dolphin Coast Landfill Management site. This project is part of South Africa's efforts to transition to cleaner industrial operations and support sustainable hazardous waste management.
Project Details and Benefits
The installation is located in KwaDukuze, KwaZulu-Natal province. It is expected to generate over 826 MWh of clean electricity annually. This will reduce the facility's dependence on the national grid, decrease carbon emissions, and ensure long-term predictability of energy costs.
The project was officially opened by the Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment together with the Mayor of KwaDukuze. The solar installation was developed concurrently with an upgraded liquid waste treatment facility for Dolphin Coast Landfill Management, demonstrating growing collaboration between private investment, engineering expertise, and environmental stewardship.

Rhino Energy Solutions CEO, Rogan Davis, emphasized that the project goes beyond simply installing solar panels. He stated that the goal was to create infrastructure that protects nature, conserves resources, enhances operational efficiency, and leaves a positive legacy for future generations.
Dolphin Coast Landfill Management is one of South Africa's leading hazardous waste management facilities, specializing in the disposal and treatment of both solid and liquid hazardous waste. The integration of renewable energy aligns with the facility's overall commitment to environmental sustainability and strengthens its resilience against rising electricity tariffs.
Engineering Aspects and Efficiency
Creating solar infrastructure at a hazardous waste landfill presented significant engineering challenges due to the corrosive environment. Rhino Energy Solutions utilized a ground-mounted array supported by 3CR12 stainless steel structures, specifically chosen for their corrosion resistance and durability over the system's expected 25-year lifespan.
The solar plant consists of 1080 photovoltaic modules installed in an east-west configuration. This provides higher module density and more stable power generation throughout the day, which better suits the facility's needs. Construction was coordinated to ensure uninterrupted waste management operations, while electrical integration complied with all existing infrastructure and grid requirements.
According to Rhino Energy Solutions' PVsyst modeling, the system will operate with a performance ratio of nearly 80%, indicating high efficiency under real operating conditions. The project is projected to prevent approximately 778 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, equivalent to taking about 170 passenger cars off South African roads or sequestering carbon equal to planting almost 12,800 trees over ten years. Over the station's entire projected 25-year service life, the total prevented emissions are estimated to be around 19,450 tons.
By integrating renewable electricity directly into its treatment processes, Dolphin Coast Landfill Management will improve energy security, reduce exposure to tariff increases, and strengthen its environmental profile. The project also highlights the growing role of renewable energy in South Africa's industrial sector, where businesses are investing in cleaner solutions to boost competitiveness, lower costs, and support national decarbonization goals.
