Zhang Yueyue wins first medal at ISSF World Championships, Qi Ying reaches podium again in Hangzhou

Young Chinese archers had a productive day at the home tournament as part of the ISSF World Championships held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, in eastern China. On this day, Zhang Yueyue won her first medal at the World Championships, and Qi Ying continued his season by securing another podium finish.

Zhang Yueyue's Achievements

The two-year-old Zhang won silver in the women's pistol event at 25 meters. She went through a tough path to the final, where she competed against Aisha Singh from India, the world record holder for the gold medal, but ultimately finished second with a score of 40 to 37. Manu Bhaker from India won bronze on the podium.

This result was a significant breakthrough for Zhang, who previously took fourth place at the World Championships stop in Ningbo during her debut season on the ISSF circuit. Returning to the competition in Zhejiang province, she secured her first award in this series.

Zhang stated that the results are not the most important aspect, emphasizing: 'It is important to learn more about myself, improve, and become a better shooter. I have been working on my weaknesses since last year, and participating in this World Championship gave me another valuable opportunity to improve.'

Qi Ying's Results

Olympic silver medalist Qi Ying also managed to reach the podium, winning bronze in the men's trap discipline. The twenty-nine-year-old athlete was the only Chinese representative to make it to the final. William Hinton from the USA won gold with 28 hits, while Angelo Scalzone from Qatar took silver with 27 hits.

Qi Ying's bronze medal continued his success, as earlier this season at the World Championships stop in Almaty, Kazakhstan, he also placed third, securing him two medals in the 2026 series.

Qi expressed his excitement before the Hangzhou competition, saying: 'I am excited, but also nervous to compete in Hangzhou because so many of the world's best shooters are gathered here. I am glad I handled the pressure, made it to the final, and enjoyed the competition.'

Despite another podium finish, Qi added that he continues to work on himself, shifting his focus to the upcoming Asian Games and World Championships.

Fan and Huang pair wins mixed doubles final at BWF Japan Open in Tokyo

China secured the sole title at the Japan Open as the Fan Yanzhe and Huang Dunping pair won the mixed doubles final. This success came after they defeated Tan Chunman and Xie Yinsuet from Hong Kong (Special Administrative Region) of China in Tokyo, Japan, on July 19, 2026.

Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian dominated Kim Hye-jeong and Kong Hee-yeon with a score of 21-14 in the first set, but the South Korean pair responded with 21-15, leveling the chances. The final set turned into a thrilling marathon where neither side could achieve a decisive breakthrough until Kim and Kong achieved a dramatic victory with a score of 30-29.

In other events of the tournament, P.V. Sindhu from India defeated Akane Yamaguchi from Japan with scores of 21-17, 21-17, becoming the first Indian woman to win the singles title at this tournament. Meanwhile, Christophe Popov from France beat Kokki Watanabe from Japan with a score of 21-11, 21-19, winning the men's singles title.

In the men's doubles category, Fajjar Al-Fian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri from Indonesia became champions, defeating the South Korean pair, Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-je, with scores of 21-19, 21-17.
