Uttarakhand Chief Distributes Subsidies for Eco-Friendly Transport and Launches 11 Clean Vehicles

Brazilian researchers discovered that so-called atmospheric rivers are responsible for most of the heatwaves recorded in the interior of Antarctica. According to data from FAPESP, these currents transport heat and moisture from the tropics to the icy continent, which accelerates the melting and intensifies global concern about sea-level rise.

Moisture corridor and climate change

Atmospheric rivers act as vast channels of moisture in the atmosphere, moving water vapor over long distances. Brazilian researchers point out that these phenomena are altering the climatic pattern of Antarctica. The topic was detailed by Heitor Evangelista da Silva, a professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (Uerj), during the 78th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC).

The researcher stated that approximately 90% of all moisture migrating from the tropics to the polar regions is a direct result of the activity of these atmospheric rivers. Measurements made by the Criosfera 1 laboratory indicate that the intensity of these events has increased in recent decades. Previously, they contributed to about a quarter of the heatwaves observed in the area, but currently, they account for almost 80% of these episodes.

New temperature records

The impacts of this warming are already visible in places previously considered less susceptible. A notable example occurred in 2022, when the Concórdia station recorded a temperature 43°C higher than expected for that period. This type of abrupt temperature increase had never been documented in any historical meteorological record of Antarctica, making it a completely unprecedented event.

Another relevant piece of data raised by the team was the recording of temperatures up to -3°C in areas located at 84 South latitude, a value very close to the starting point of ice melt in that region. The main findings from the monitoring include: nearly 80% of heatwaves are linked to atmospheric rivers; about 90% of polar moisture comes from these currents; temperatures up to -3°C were recorded in remote locations; and the progression of these events is increasingly heading towards the interior of Antarctica.

Concern over strategic glaciers

Scientific attention is also focused on the Thwaites and Pine Island glaciers, which are crucial for maintaining the stability of the continental ice. Silva warned that the loss of these frontal glaciers could have critical consequences for subsequent continental ice loss. He specified that only the collapse of the Thwaites Glacier would have the potential to raise the average sea level by 63 centimeters, while the instability of Pine Island could lead to this increase reaching 1 meter.

Brazilian monitoring and sea ice

Since 2015, scientists have been tracking an acceleration in the reduction of sea ice around Antarctica. The smaller amount of ice reflecting solar radiation causes the ocean to absorb more heat, driving a new cycle of warming. Silva emphasized that this decrease in sea ice corresponds to twice the area of Greenland in terms of mass loss, a fact not predicted by any existing numerical model.

To deepen the understanding of these transformations, the Brazilian project will continue to increase monitoring of the continent. The next mission will not only track greenhouse gases, aerosols, and snow accumulation but will also install the first Brazilian telescope in Antarctica, strengthening the capacity to observe changes that may affect the climate far beyond the Antarctic region.

Uzbekistan officially presented an updated electronic geospatial database on biodiversity and protected natural areas called ECODATA on July 28, 2026. This platform consolidates ecological data into a unified digital system designed for natural resource control, supporting scientific research, and aiding in decision-making.

Event and Participants

The ECODATA presentation took place at the Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia at Green University. The event was attended by representatives from the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Green University, the scientific community, international organizations, and development partners.

System Functionality and Goals

Yusipbek Kazbekov, Deputy Chairman of the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, emphasized that digital technologies enable more accurate tracking of species distribution, ecosystem status, and natural resources. He noted that ECODATA is intended to transform ecological data into a practical tool for government bodies, scientists, specialists, international partners, and the public.

The platform was developed by the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change in collaboration with UNDP and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) as part of a project on the wetlands of the Aral Sea. ECODATA consolidates previously disparate information on flora, fauna, protected zones, forests, water bodies, pastures, nature management, and monitoring results.

ECODATA Structure and Capabilities

The system includes seven main modules and over 60 interconnected tables, covering all 12 regions and the Karakalpakstan Republic. The platform provides different access levels for users at national and regional levels, with all actions recorded in a specialized audit module.

Specific sections of ECODATA focus on flora and fauna. They allow users to register species, track populations and their distribution, document conservation statuses, including inclusion in the Red Book, and maintain specialized cadastres. For plant life, the system supports accounting for rare species, natural pastures, their productivity and condition, as well as nurseries and plantation registries.

Furthermore, the system contains information on state nature reserves, national parks, sanctuaries, natural monuments, protected landscapes, forestry and hunting enterprises, fish farms, and ecotourism zones. For each territory, geographical, ecological, and economic data can be combined, including information on flora, fauna, forests, and water bodies.

Mobility and Citizen Participation

One of the system's functions is data collection using mobile devices directly in natural areas. Specialists can record observations and cadastral data using GPS coordinates, photographs, and other materials. If there is no internet connection, data is saved locally on the device and synchronized with the central database once connectivity is restored.

Citizens and researchers can also submit reports on observed plants and animals, attaching photos and coordinates, and unidentified species can be forwarded to specialists for subsequent verification.

Management Tools and Integration

ECODATA is also equipped with tools for natural resource management. Specifically, a specialized quota module allows for calculating limits based on species population numbers, their distribution, and available resources. Digital government services are integrated into the system; certain procedures will be moved to electronic format via my.gov.uz, including nursery registration and planting material confirmation.

Akiko Fuji, UNDP representative in Uzbekistan, noted that scientific institutions will be able to upload research and monitoring results into ECODATA, forming a cumulative archive. This will allow for analyzing changes in species populations and distribution over many years and help identify territories and species requiring additional attention.

Future Development Plans

In the future, developers plan to expand the mobile application, strengthen GIS integration, implement automatic alerts regarding critical declines in rare species populations, create tools for assessing the impacts of climate change, and link the platform with international information systems.
