The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued alerts for heavy rains, storms, and low humidity in various regions of Brazil during this Tuesday (28) and Wednesday (29).
Focus on Southern Brazil
Rio Grande do Sul is pointed out as the main area of concern due to the risk of large volumes of precipitation and hail occurrence. A cold front moving across the Atlantic Ocean, near the South Region, is promoting the formation of an extensive trough between Paraguay and Rio Grande do Sul, which favors the intensification of rains and storms.
According to Inmet, the state of Rio Grande do Sul is under a red warning of great danger, with projected rainfall accumulations that may exceed 100 millimeters in a 24-hour period. Additionally, there is an active orange alert for storms, including the possibility of hail. The strengthening of the Low-Level Jet (JBN) is also contributing to raising wind speeds near the surface.
Main Risks and Expansion
The highlighted risks include intense rainfall in Rio Grande do Sul, exceeding 100 mm in 24 hours; hail in several locations in the state; wind gusts that can reach up to 60 km/h; and the progression of these instabilities to the states of Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul. On Wednesday (29), the areas affected by rain will extend to Paraná and southern Mato Grosso do Sul, while Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul maintain the forecast for thunderstorms and rain.
Dry Weather in the Interior
In contrast to the storms in the South, a vast region of the Brazilian interior will remain under dry weather conditions. Inmet signals low humidity levels, particularly in the Center-West, inland Southeast, and the MATOPIBA area (Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia). In certain parts of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Goiás, relative air humidity may drop below 20% during the afternoon. Meanwhile, Brasília forecasts a minimum of 13°C, and Cuiabá may record temperatures up to 38°C.
In the Southeast, the climate picture remains stable, characterized by few clouds. There is potential for fog at dawn on the coast and in the eastern part of Minas Gerais, in addition to alerts issued for low humidity in São Paulo and Minas Gerais.
Situation in Other Regions
In the North regions, isolated showers are expected in Amazonas, Roraima, Amapá, and the coast of Pará. For Wednesday, instabilities may generate thunderstorms in western Amazonas and Roraima, with Palmas potentially reaching 37°C. In the Northeast, precipitation tends to concentrate on the coastal strip and in areas of Maranhão and Piauí, keeping the interior dry and under low humidity alert, with Teresina predicted to reach 35°C.
The climate outlook for the coming days will present a strong contrast: while the South Region faces the threat of severe storms, much of the country's interior will remain hot and dry. Authorities recommend that the population carefully monitor all meteorological warnings, especially in areas under alert.
