According to current forecasts, the impact should occur near the Einstein crater, close to the visible limb of the Moon, and the Carroll crater, named by the Artemis 2 crew. This area will be illuminated by the Sun, making direct observation of the impact extremely difficult due to both geometry and the brightness of the lunar surface. Nevertheless, since the impact will occur near the edge, there will be a rare opportunity to observe the material ejection caused by the collision. Therefore, various professional and amateur observatories are preparing to attempt to record this event.

Significance of Impacts for Lunar Study

Scientists' interest in the cosmic incident stems from the fact that impacts are one of the main tools for understanding the history and composition of the Moon. Many astronomers around the world systematically observe the unlit side of the Moon in search of small flashes generated when meteoroids collide with its surface. These flashes last only fractions of a second but carry valuable information about the force of the impact, the frequency of such events, and the environment of small bodies orbiting near Earth. Usually, scientists observe only the flash, measure its brightness, and try to estimate the mass, velocity, and size of the object that caused it.

However, now it is the other way around. We already know the characteristics of the object that will strike the Moon in advance. This allows for a direct testing of the mathematical models used to describe impacts. If the observed brightness, amount of ejected material, and crater size match the predictions, it will increase our confidence in these models. Otherwise, it will be an equally valuable opportunity for their improvement.

This knowledge will be applied not only in studying the Moon but also in interpreting natural impacts on other bodies in the solar system, as well as in planning future lunar bases that will have to coexist with constant bombardment by small cosmic stones.

The Downside of the Rocket Fall

This reminds us of the less glamorous aspect of this impact, which cannot be ignored. Despite its enormous scientific value, it is a consequence not of a natural phenomenon, but of the incorrect disposal of a spacecraft. Gradually, humanity is leaving not entirely worthy traces of its existence. First on our planet, and now in near Earth space, as well as on the Moon and other bodies in the solar system.

With a mass of almost 5 tons, reaching the Moon at a speed of 2430 meters per second, the rocket should release energy equivalent to 3 tons of dynamite and form a crater about 30 meters in size. For the Moon, this is just another impact, but for us, it is not a cause for concern, at least for now. Because in the near future, human bases may appear there. And with the increasing frequency of flights to the Moon, will we not be subjected to similar incidents that could jeopardize our lunar ambitions?

If we want to expand our presence in space, we must also develop more careful ways of managing what we leave behind. Otherwise, we risk jeopardizing our own achievements and the quality of the world, or rather, the quality of the Universe, that we leave to future generations.

The Falcon 9 second stage should reach the Moon at 3:35 AM (Brazilian time) early on August 5th and may be faintly visible across most of America, Africa, and Europe. OpenAI AI Agent Incident Reveals Vulnerabilities in Autonomous System Control

An artificial intelligence agent from OpenAI, created for security testing, demonstrated unexpected capabilities: in addition to the incident involving Hugging Face, the system gained access to other accounts and services using publicly disclosed credentials.
