Musicians gather in Durban to honor the legacy of jazz performer Sipho Gumede

Next month, a concert will take place in Durban to commemorate the memory of the legendary South African bassist and composer Sipho Gumede. Leading musicians, friends, family, and jazz enthusiasts will attend the event.

Concert Details and Gumede's Legacy

The annual concert in honor of Sipho Gumede will be held at the BAT Centre on Sunday, August 30th, at 4:00 PM. Tickets are available through Computicket for 200 rand. Gumede, considered one of South Africa's finest guitarists and musical visionaries, passed away in July 2004 after battling lung cancer. More than two decades later, his innovative work with the renowned jazz-fusion group Sakhile, as well as his successful solo career, continues to inspire musicians of different generations.

He created numerous timeless hits, including compositions such as Meeting Point, Faces and Places, Your Picture Still Hangs On My Wall, Please Don't Dance, Peacocks Today, and Feather Dusters Tomorrow.

Participants and Event Program

This year, the tribute will feature the renowned pianist, composer, and producer Don Laka, who played with Gumede in Sakhile. He will be accompanied by bassist Bongani Nkwanyana, one of Gumede's students and a former member of his group, and bassist and vocalist Nomusa Ndavo, another musician whose mentor was a jazz icon. A special segment of the program will be the 'Conversations About Sipho' session, where colleagues, friends, and musicians will share personal memories and previously untold stories about the man behind the music.

Significance of the Event for Family and Organizers

Organizers emphasize that this event goes beyond a simple musical performance; it aims to celebrate Gumede's lasting legacy in mentorship, innovation, and artistic excellence, while preserving the stories of one of South Africa's most influential jazz pioneers. Mantombi Gumede, the late artist's daughter, who he wrote the classical composition Mantombi for, stated that preserving her father's legacy remains a deeply personal mission for her. The CEO and founder of the Sipho Gumede Music Foundation noted that the annual concert is not only a celebration of his musical genius but also an opportunity to honor the values of mentorship, excellence, and cultural pride that defined his life.

BAT Centre Director, Nise Malange, expressed pride in the opportunity to continue honoring an artist who maintained long-standing ties with the center. Don Laka described his performances with Gumede in Sakhile as one of the defining moments of his career, noting Gumede's rare musical genius and incredible spirit.

For Bongani Nkwanyana, a student of the late Sipho Gumede, the concert is a tribute to the mentor who shaped his career. He stated that every time he performs Gumede's music, he carries a part of his wisdom.
